AAS-VG799 Cellular GSM Home Security Alarm System (R) Review

AAS-VG799 Cellular GSM Home Security Alarm System (R)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a DIY alarm system that uses GSM dialer since I don't have a landline. The reviews seem to be good for these kind of systems from AAS, except from a few reviewers. I decided to go with the most expensive one because I wanted to have the extra sensors, wireless sirens, and remote keypad. Here are the pros and cons:
Pro:
1. The instruction manual is very easy to follow. You can request a soft copy of the instruction manual before you buy the system.
2. It is a two-unit system. One is the main unit and the other is the GSM dialer. This design is more flexible. If I decided to get a landline later, I can use the main unit to connect to my landline.
3. Communication with the seller is easy and quick.
Con:
1. As other reviewers mentioned, the delay time to arm the system is in minute increment. Note, if you use the remote keyless to arm the system, it arms the system immediately. The delay only works if you arm the system from the main unit.
2. When alarm activated, the sensor number that triggers the alarm only displays on the main unit for 30 seconds. Then, it disappears. I wish that it stays there until I erase it so that I know which sensor triggers the alarm.
3. Not cheap.
Tip: The double sided tapes on the sensors do not hold well. I use velcro instead and it works better. This will allow me to easily remove the sensor from the door/window to change the battery at a later date.

Wireless Motion Detector Sensor Review

Wireless Motion Detector Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the motion detector for the Mace wireless security system. It almost does everything it should but has some room for improvement.
First, it should be available in other colors than white. I would suggest they make a black version and a charcoal gray version.
Second, it should have a sensitivity dial just like the motion detectors used in outdoor motion-detector lights.
Third, it should have a switchable daylight detector photocell so it could be set to not react during daylight hours. This is because it has an issue with false-positive signals due to placement and light fluctuations during certain hours of daytime.
Fourth, they supply a adhesive "window" to restrict the angle of detection. This should be a clip-on plastic piece.
Fifth, the detector has a red LED light to indicate when the sensor reacts. This needs a switch so that the light can be turned-off. You may want the sensor to react and send a wireless signal to the base unit without flashing a light that indicates it was triggered. During set-up you would want to test when the sensor "sees" something so switching the LED light would be very useful.

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Indoor Master System Camera Review

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Indoor Master System Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Wilife camera system for two months, and I've found it meets my needs to provide a view of what's happening at certain places around the house (inside or out). I found the system delivers the goods by providing the homeowner a fairly clear image, stores the image in an easily managed retrieval program, and you can view "what is happening" when you are away from home over the Internet via your laptop or a smart phone. Also, you can individually set the cameras up to have the system E-mail or text you if there is motion detected or the system goes "off-line."
The skinny review:
Pluses: for the most part easy set-up, trouble shooting is extensively detailed (Logitech obviously wants you to be able to solve connection problems), Internet accessibility actions are recorded (and easily accessed), adaptability, the quality of the images can be varied, images can be saved, and movies can be saved of what is picked-up by the camera(s) in a WMA file.
Negatives: starts to get pricey by the time you get your 4th camera, some places in the house not easily receptive to signals and not all cameras are suited to all areas (I write about this below).
Full Review:
This "Starter" system with the indoor camera is a great way to see what the system can do for you. I say this because, for me, the indoor camera was a little harder to set-up, but it also was flexible enough that I was able to easily change its location and could tell where I wanted to place my other cameras before purchasing them. In setting these locations, I sometimes used a laptop connected to the Internet to give me instant feedback on my placement of cameras and what the image would look like.
Regarding problems, most had to do with receiving the signal from various points in my house, and my house, approaching 40 years old, has its share of additions that I am thinking a newer home with continuous wiring won't have this problem. But, I am getting ahead of myself.
I do not know why a "surveillance" system has always intrigued me, but over the years I have tried several different wireless products (X-10's system, another wireless system with the cameras used with USB 2.0 water-proof Wireless Web Ready DVR Security System w/ 4 Pack Highigh Resolution Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Cameras with only "poor" to "fair" results. WiLife's system provided me with an affordable "starter" system, a good image, and it kept track of the activity that the cameras recorded.
Here are my observations regarding the system with all of the various components and their installation:
First of all, it is easy to hook-up. With the starter kit for the inside, I installed the software on a media computer I had integrated into my audio/visual system, plugged-in the receiver to an outlet that wasn't "protected" by a surge protector and placed the camera in another part of the house, plugging that camera's LAN-like connector into another outlet. The first time I hooked it up, it searched for the camera(s) after I told it I had "one." As I added cameras, I merely clicked on the "add additional cameras" button, changed the number of cameras, and it found them. With regards to firewall issues, I use OneCare Windows Live OneCare 2.0 (Up to 3 Users) for my computer's security, and it handled this for me by asking if I wanted to allow WiLife. I did and that issue was solved.
With regards to set-up issues and the inside camera, I live in a rather sprawling house that has multiple floors and an addition (which is why my "radio signal" X-10 and other cameras had problems). I took the camera and placed it in different areas to see how it worked. In all but two places, it worked well and was easily picked-up by the WiLife program. With the camera at one location, after several times of not being able to discover it, the program actually had me assign an address, like an IP address, for the camera. After doing that, it worked fine, but I ended-up using an outside camera at that location, which picked-up the signal right away. NOTE: while I did not use the manual to work-out my problems, the manual is very detailed and a very good manual, especially in working through connection and firewall problems (if you have them). The manual is available on the CD and from their websight [...], and if you have any doubts about whether to get the system, you should download the manual and glance through it. In hindsight, I should have consulted it in addition to the instructions given by the program's help section in dealing with my minor problems.
As for the various set-ups, on one camera I use the infrared light, and it is very inobtrusive. On the other cameras, I have an inside camera that is affixed to a window by the suction cup with the wide angle lens and another inside camera that is just in a room. This inside camera with the suction cup has stayed attached since I attached it six-weeks ago. One note about the infrared camera, it should not be used around a pool or spa for it sometimes "shows," depending on the color of the swimsuit, the swimmer's figure under the swimsuit.
Which camera work best? The outdoor camera works best. I have a good picture from dawn to dusk (and even in twilight), and I have not had any problems with them sending the picture to the WiLife Computer Center. I have one of them pointed at my front door and one in the backyard that can view my hot tub or the backyard (more on that in a minute). I wish there was a way I could post a video, but if you look-up my name on youtube, I have posted one that shows the neighborhood children coming to the front door and getting candy from my wife. In that video, you'd see the picture of the entrance with just the light coming through the fixed-lights in the door, then, the fluorescent floodlights come-on (those usually take a few seconds to "warm" up), and finally the lights on the side of the doors come on. During the day, the picture is very good (I have posted a picture of the front door during the day).
With the backyard outdoor camera, I attached-it to something my X-10 camera used that could rotate the camera to fixed points that one established. It was called a "ninja" unit, and I have found it to be helpful in allowing my backyard camera to view several spots in rotation, or however I want to do it.
The clock, or "spy," camera is another camera that is easy to use. I hooked it up, and it was worked fine from the get-go. It picks-up an image in slightly lower light better than the inside camera. If there is one thing I wish the system had, it's that the clock camera had a battery back-up. While the electricity doesn't go off but once or twice a year where I live, it is still something I wish it had. On the plus side, the clock is one of the easiest I have found to reset.
The system has done what I wanted it to do: I had some concerns that some of the neighbor children were trying to get into the spa, and the cameras showed me this wasn't true (my small dog was actually slipping-in through a 4-in opening); It shows me who is at, and who has come to, the front and other doors; and it has shown me what, if anything, my daughter does in my audio/visual room when I am not at home.
If I had young children, I would probably have one of the cameras in their room and in their playroom, and pointed outside to the yards where they play. With my dog, I have been able to find-out if he is damaging anything while being left alone (sometimes he is guilty). Because the cameras turn-on and record activity, and show the recording on a time-line, one can easily go back and view what has happen during those recordings.
This is not a security system, but I have found it supplements the centralized alarm system on my house quite well. Which brings-up an instance, and a feature I have not mentioned, the ability to view what is happening over your computer or your smart phone. We were out of town for the day, and I received a call about the alarm going off. The police were on their way to the house and the alarm dispatcher was checking to see if we had done anything to trigger the alarm. I told them no, and to let me know if they found anything. I immediately logged-in on the WiLife web site with my smart phone and clicked on the outside cameras. Because this was at night, I first saw the policeperson's flashlight at one of the entrances to the backyard (the alarm came from the back door being opened). Then, the outside security lights came on, and finally the police checking the doors. With the WiLife system, you can actually have notices sent to you if there is activity from any of the cameras by text and even an image of what triggered the camera if you want that information. Some of these features require a subscription fee, and this might be something you would want to consider. I have the subscription and like it. Regarding this instance, it turned-out that I forgot to close one door all the way and dog pushed it open.
Overall, I have found the WiLife System has met my needs. I did get the extended warranties on equipment through NEW as offered on Amazon, and have been pleased with their service. The two times I have had a warranty issue with other equipment (a computer and a printer), NEW has taken care of the matter quickly or has had very good technical support to help me resolve the problem Even though I am not anticipating any problems with the WiLife System, sometimes it doesn't hurt to have the extra protection. I especially thought an extended warranty would be good since one cannot hook-it-up through an UPS or surge protector. I have uploaded several pictures to give you an idea of how the images sent by the cameras look.

Dropcam Wi-Fi Wireless Internet Home Security Camera Review

Dropcam Wi-Fi Wireless Internet Home Security Camera

As a 24/7 caregiver for my wife, this camera has made a wonderful contribution to our life together. I'm constantly alert to her safety and needs when we are together, but always a little anxious when I'm away from her room. Now, she's visible whenever those anxieties arise, either on my computer or on my iPhone.
Setup was very simple. We needed to run a 75 foot Ethernet Cat5E cable from the camera to our router; the unit comes with a 13 footer. The company's service was superb; their response to my question arrived within 24 hours: "The Dropcam product or router will neither affect the ethernet signal as the performance will be due to the quality of the ethernet cable itself as well as various environmental factors such as EM interference. Under normal circumstances, I personally would not anticipate any issues with a 75 foot cable."
The camera could be improved with a simple cover that would allow the user to turn it off or on (I use a wash cloth draped over the camera to block transmissions, but worry a bit about overheating the unit). I would hate to see my wife featured on a pirated YouTube video, especially during some of our more intimate caregiving activities.
And, I'd be similarly concerned if I was monitoring a home safe, and images could be pirated with enough definition to read the combination.
But, for everyday monitoring of my wife while I'm off washing clothes or dishes, cooking, walking the dogs, running to the store -- anytime when I'm away for a few minutes -- it's wonderful to be able to see her on demand.
In other caregiving applications, I could see mounting the unit close to the floor showing only the legs and feet of the person being cared for. If they fell, of course, their entire body would be visible. The unit also comes with a sound feed -- the Dropcam Echo Wireless IP Home Security Camera with Audio and Online Recording -- which we may upgrade to, but hasn't seemed necessary to us so far.

Samsung Techwin America SME-4221 8 Channel Security System with 22-Inch Monitor

The Samsung Sme-4221 is a quality 8-channel video surveillance system at a reasonable price. IT HAS 1TB HARD DRIVE AND 4 IT CAMERA. The system is part of Samsung Techwin's DIY (do-it-yourself) product line for home and small business applications. I must say this was my second attempt purchasing a video surveillance system. I returned another brand to my local electronics store because the camera images were not up to my standards. (It was a very popular brand.) The Samsung DVR is as easy as possible to operate for a device with so many powerful and useful features. The IP networking was easy to set up and the instruction books are awesome. With any networked device of this kind, setup is much faster and easier if you have a friend or know someone with network experience to assist. If you don't have anyone to help, you're still in luck! Samsung includes a separate networking instruction manual loaded with setup examples for several brands of gateway/routers. Now it's time to tell you what Samsung could improve upon. The system uses 6-pin mini DIN cables. You must either use the supplied sixty-foot cable lengths or order longer ones at additional cost. Also, the mini DIN connectors are much larger in diameter than the wire itself, so a larger hole is needed to be drilled if passing the cable through a wall. The LAN/WAN web interface is only fully functional with the older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. If you prefer using Firefox, Safari, or other browsers, you will have limited functionality and won't be able to search and playback recordings. I hope Samsung fixes this issue because it's really inconvenient and annoying. All things considered, I really like this system despite the drawbacks. I would certainly recommend this system to everyone.

I really wanted this system to work. I read all of the reviews and everything seemed great accept for the wireless range. After setting up the system (w/additions camera), all looked great. Setup was easy and directions were clear. The night viewing range was good and the reception range was better than I expected. Initially I was very happy, but after a few days of use I noticed issues with the picture. One camera showed a clear picture while the over was almost completely washed out and at night showed very blurry. And a day after rain or snow, both camera were fogged for a few days. No big deal I thought, I just have a defective camera(s). Unfortunately after replacing the one bad camera, the second camera was now washed out and barely visible. So I figure lets give it one last try and replace the second camera and LCD receiver. Again, same issues. Bad picture on one camera and perfect picture on the other. I finally gave up and returned everything to amazon. Now I'm back to square one.

Auto Dialer Security and Safety Alarm Review

Auto Dialer Security and Safety Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking to add a little protection to your house or apt, this might be what you're looking for.
First off, it's got some nice features. The dialing of numbers works well, and there is a panel you can remove that gives access to some terminals that allow you to add other inputs and an external siren. Also, the siren inside is plenty loud in my opinion.
The longest delay you can set before the system triggers is 20 seconds. So if this isn't mounted right near your door, you pretty much have to go straight to it and disarm it. The delay after arming it is a solid 60 seconds.
My biggest problem with it was that it's all one piece, because the best place to put a motion sensor is high up in a corner, and the best place to put the control box is somewhere hidden near your door (and near a phone outlet). I actually hacked apart the device and extended the wires connecting the two pieces so I could mount the motion sensor farther from the control box. This arrangement is working out nicely. The battery backup works fine, and I also extended the power cord to the control box.
The motion sensor itself picks up movement very nicely and doesn't pick up movement outside glass windows, exactly what you'd want.
The ease of adding inputs and outputs and extending and modding what is there makes this device a good brain for a DIY security system. Plus, you can't beat the price.

This product is absolutely AWESOME!
I purchased one of these systems for my home, about 4 weeks ago. The installation took a little bit of time, but was well worth it. After I install this system, my house keeper was cleaning my house, while I was at work. I logged-in to my house to see what the house keeper was doing. To my surprise the housekeeper was stealing my money from by bedroom. Of course they don't work for me any more. Plus I was able to save the video and forward it to all there customers, to warn them too. Trust me, the investment was worth it. This product really is great, I fully recommend buying this. Here's why:
1)You get 4 Color camera's that auto adjust to the light, also provide night vision (It really works)
2)The cameras provide motion detection. The wired setup provides both video and power to the each camera.
3)The DVR stores more than 1 week of stored video on a 500 gig hard drive. It can store more if you setup the DVR to motion detection only.
4)The DVR has TONS of settings and features to adjust the camera's recording, network and much more for your custom needs.
5)It will notify you if there is activity.
6)You can login with the special secure software that is provided.
7)You can remotely control the DVR from your computer ANYWHERE.
8)You can login to see all 4 zones from your Android and IPHONE.
9)You also can record audio from all 4 zones.
10)You get everything you need to setup this product. There is no gotchas or extra things to buy, everything is included.
This is a high quality professional setup for home and business. Plus it's affordable. These folks put together truly awesome!

I have a Mac with a wifi system. I was *very* pleased to find that this camera is exceptionally easy to install (I don't enjoy messing with DNS, IP addresses etc). Just plug the supplied Ethernet cable into the router and the camera. Go to your computer and browse to [...] . Describe the color of the lights on the camera and ba boom. Your hot and good to go.
I got the 'echo' model and the sound works great - even from 30 feet away speaking in a normal voice.
Also, the notification system (sending me an email with there is motion or sound) worked great; as did being able to see my camera on my iPhone AND iPad.
So far I can't find anything I don't like about this camera.

Uniden UDW10003 Wireless Video Survillance Portable Security System (Black) Review

Uniden UDW10003 Wireless Video Survillance Portable Security System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually bought this from another retailer (sorry Amazon, I love you!) and I'm VERY pleased with the performance of this camera. I actually have mounted mine outside the house using the (included) aluminum mounting bracket. Please note that this camera is NOT waterproof therefore I have it mounted under the eaves where it will not get wet. While not specifically marketed as an outdoor camera, I'm happy to report it working extremely well in that capacity. The operating temperature is rated only for 14 - 120 degrees so when the bitter winds of winter begin to blow I will have to take the camera down for a few months :-( As others have stated, the picture quality is PERFECT (all digital using Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum). The camera will automatically switch to a very powerful infrared illuminator at dusk and it lights up the whole entry way of my house (about a 30 ft wide swath). The only annoyance is that Uniden didn't think to put a switch to turn the I/R illuminator OFF which would come in really handy if you wanted to mount the camera indoors looking out through a pane of glass. In this case the I/R illuminator reflects off the glass immediately in front of the camera rendering the image useless so either plan to use this camera OUTDOORS or INDOORS but not INDOORS LOOKING OUTDOORS. Inside the home the I/R illumination is ridiculously bright and fills the entire room with invisible light which only the camera can pick up. The camera also has the ability to auto-cycle between up to 4 cameras at pre-set intervals of time (5/10/15/20 seconds) and has the ability to watch all 4 cameras at once in QUAD mode. I haven't tried the included PC software that records all of this but other users seem to be happy with this function. The range is good, it will penetrate my home about 120' but struggles a bit when the signal comes from outdoors to my basement. Both the camera and the monitor use Lithium-Ion batteries so the recharge time is quick and they last for hours (there are included power adaptors for both camera and monitor included). Overall Uniden did an EXCELLENT job with this packaged system and I've been very happy with it - highly recommended!

VideoSecu Night Vision Security Camera, with Built in Microphone, 30 Infrared LEDs for Home Video Systems Free Bracket 1ZN Review

Granted, this is the first video security camera I have owned, but I was very pleased with this purchase. Our purpose for buying was to use it as a baby monitor. The combination microphone, IR night vision, and full color (though the colors are a little off) visible light, and price ($25!) was a perfect combination for our purposes. It provides a secure and interference free (not to mention cheap) option to the wireless systems. A drawback in comparison to a traditional baby monitor is that it isn't as portable.
I purchased a RF modulator in combination with this camera and back fed the video/audio into our home's coax lines so that the feed could be watched on some old NTSC televisions in the master bedroom and the family room. Belkin RF Modulator ( F8V3063 )
Be sure that you purchase the AC adapter, this unit doesn't come with one. VideoSecu 12V DC 500MA Regulated CCTV Camera Power Supply AC to DC Power Adapter 1AR

Wireless Door/window Sensor Review

Wireless Door/window Sensor

This is an additional door or window sensor for the Mace wireless system. The unit does what it must and has some nice options such as making an alert sound or only sending a silent signal to the main controller. Being wireless is a great plus because you do not need to run wires and that means there are no wires to cut or be tampered with.

I ordered this after reading the description thouroughly. I was under the impression that the whole system supported sound, meaning the cameras sent sound to the DVR and it would allow one channel sound to be monitored at a time. All the cameras DO NOT have sound outputs or cables. The DVR DOES have sound inputs, the RCA type, one for each camera and one output to match the monitor out. The video connections are BNC type. Don't order this if you NEED SOUND. You won't have sound from any camera supplied with this system.
Now the positive part of the review. The DVR and all the cameras have very solid feel and the DVR functions are very acceptable. The remote works well. It can even be hooked up to the internet for monitoring while away. So if you need a very decent DVR with NO SOUND from the cameras for a decent price this fits that bill.

AAS-V500 Wireless Home Security Alarm System Pet Immune DIY (R) Review

AAS-V500 Wireless Home Security Alarm System Pet Immune DIY (R)
Average Reviews:

I researched this system pretty carefully, along with similar products by AAS. For the price paid, I feel like I got my money's worth. it seems like a waste of money to me to pay a monitoring service like ADT to safeguard your property with equipment that you're essentially leasing when you could do it yourself for hundreds less a year. That being said, this is a significant investment that will require you to spend a few hours setting up/programming/installing the components. But I cannot put a price tag on the peace of mind it brings to me and my family, as I'm a light sleeper who's always worried about a break in ever since it happened to me in college. Now, I can rest assured that this system will alert me and my loved ones if anyone ever attempts a burglary or home invasion.
PROS OF THIS SYSTEM:
- Affordable price for everything included; consider that this kit includes the external wireless siren and glass break sensor, which if you were to price them separately on AAS' web site, would cost a lot by themselves.
- Very loud alarms. You may want to install and conduct tests with earplugs in place.
- Accurate motion detectors; they don't miss a trick
-Ability to build onto your system with additional components that can be purchased later. This was very important to me.
- 4 keyfobs are a good idea; 1 for me, 1 for the wife, 1 for backup, and 1 for upstairs. We actually arm our system at night when we go to bed by clicking on a keyfob that we have attached to the side of the top of the stairway and I installed a rope that we latch across the stairway at night so that no one accidentally goes downstairs and trips the alarm.
- Door chime function is nice; good to know when someone comes in the front or back door (eg, kids late at night).
- Good customer service; AAS got back to me quickly by phone and email when I had a couple questions.
CONS OF THIS SYSTEM:
- Instruction manual is not well written and is hard to follow at times, but you can figure things out pretty well on your own.
- The alarm chirps quite loudly when you arm or disarm the system. I was hoping for a mild chirp that lasts a half a second, but the signal goes on for about 2 seconds and can wake up the family/neighbors if you come in late at night.
- Signals from the keyfob aren't always instantly recognized by the keypad. Sometimes I have to press the "disarm" button twice, for example, for it to work.
- Pet immune capability of the motion detector not very good. My 5 lb. cat triggered one of the detectors.
Overall, I recommend this product based on its expandability, quality components, and value. For less than $300, you can't do much better based on my research. I also enhanced my property's overall security with video cameras, motion detector outdoor lights, panic buttons, defense weapons and we have a guard dog. It also helps when you have a police officer living on the block.
