Liftmaster 976LM/977LM 390Mhz Wireless Keyless Entry Pad Review

Liftmaster 976LM/977LM 390Mhz Wireless Keyless Entry Pad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have a Chamberlain LiftMaster Professional model 2280 with "Security+" (just marketing talk for the rolling changing code that all openers have had for 10+ yrs), and an orange learn button (we'll come back to this) on the back of the unit under the rear translucent light bulb cover. The opener manual specifies a 976LM keypad for this unit. This keypad has a 9v battery, lights up, allows an additional temporary code to be set by # of openings or # of hours, and is grayish-cream in color. Two screws to mount the unit, with one mounting hole on the top outside of the keypad and the other behind the battery cover at bottom. Contrary to comments elsewhere: 1) you do not have to hold the buttons down longer to get them to "take" ... I just punch 'em in like any other keypad I've had over the years; 2) it does not take time to reset if you mistype ... it just takes the last 4 digits you entered before pressing Send and reacts immediately if you enter a new set. Nice because you don't have to close and re-open the cover or hit Send if you know you mistyped ... just enter the last 4 digits correctly before hitting Send; 3) the buttons are the common "rubbery" ones on most all openers and they're fine; and 4) you CAN set a temporary code. Now you're going to love this ... the Chamberlain website: a) doesn't recognize a 2280 model # garage opener (I'm staring at it on the cover of the manual and it's stamped on the opener); b) doesn't say anything about a 976LM keypad; c) specifies the 940CB keypad if you have a red learning button, or a 940D if you have a purple learning button, or a 740CB for "older models" (which bringing up the instructions says applies to yellow, grey, green, or white learning button units); and d) ... has no orange button recommendation! Unforgiveable. However, the instructions that actually come with the 976LM keypad clearly say it's for units "with an orange learning button" ... which is what I have ... go figure. Keypads are all $40 on Chamberlain site, so $25 here is a good deal. In summary, simple to install (2 screws), simple to program (press & release the Learn button on your overhead opener, enter a 4 digit code on the keypad, and press & hold Enter on the keypad until your garage opener light blinks), and works fine ... at least for us orange button people.

Simulation Security Camera with Talking Warnings Review

Simulation Security Camera with Talking Warnings

I received the product but feel that it is poorly designed. The voice message has no volume control and the motion sensor only works when you are 2-3 feet away. If I have to mount the camera low enough for the sensor to work, an intruder can knock the camera off the wall and they will know that it is fake. I do not recommend this product.

Sharx Security SCNC3606 Cat5 PoE Wired Weatherproof Outdoor MPEG4 IP Network Camera with Infrared Night Vision and built in DVR Review

Sharx Security SCNC3606 Cat5 PoE Wired Weatherproof Outdoor MPEG4 IP Network Camera with Infrared Night Vision and built in DVR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first I was a bit skeptical about this camera, a good quality outdoor, POE camera with an IR cut filter at that price seemed too good to be true. I had read some positive reviews on the Y-Cam Bullet, of which the Sharx is a rebranded version, but the Sharx version was priced even lower so I figured I'd chance it. I'm glad I did! Immediately after opening the box I was impressed with the quality. It looks and feels solid and well built. Setup was quick and easy. The image is clear and the colors are very good in day time viewing. The IR works well and I can clearly see the image at night.
While the camera does support POE, the wiring harness that comes out the back of the camera contains several other connectors, for power, audio and alarm. Unfortunately these cannot be removed, so any connections you don't use will need to be secured in a weatherproof location. I suppose it was expected that all of those wires be pushed through a wall to terminate indoors, but in my case that was not possible. An outdoor electrical box was recommended by Sharx in the manual. I picked one up at the local hardware store for a few dollars and hid it as best I could.
I using i-Catcher software and as this camera was not on its list of supported cameras I needed to contact Sharx support to answer a few questions about it. They emailed me back within the hour, were very knowledgeable about the product and quite helpful. Over the next several emails I asked them a lot of questions. They were always quick to respond and with complete and useful answers.Pros:
Supports standard POE
Clear and vivid daytime image
IR lighting and cut filter makes for good night images
Well built, solid, appears to be well sealed
Outstanding email support
Very thorough printed manual
A good amount of adjustments in the menus
Cons:
No user installable firmware, requires Sharx support if you need to upgrade.
No downloadable documentation. Don't lose the manual!
Several hardwired connections on the wiring harness that have to be weatherproofed if not installed through a wall.
Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase. It is an excellent camera when considering the low cost, good quality day and night images and the superb support behind it.

Netgear 85Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit - XETB1001 Review

Netgear 85Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit - XETB1001
Average Reviews:

Your Prayers Have Been Answered!
OK, this story dates back about two years or at least it feels that long. I have a long ranch style home and Comcast cable with a router. My issue has always been getting one of our three Xbox consoles to connect and all three from getting kicked off periodically. Needless to say, the one console that has a hard time connecting is the farthest away from the router. I would say it is 60 to 70 feet away and up stairs. So let's go through the check list of things I purchased that did not work:
Routers -
Linksys G, Linksys G MaxRange, and Linksys N routers.
Belkin N+N Dual Band
Same problem. Bad of no connection to Xbox Live.
And yes, I purchased the new Xbox N adapter and it improved the signal but it did not fix the problem.
What a failed to tell you is that about 1 month into the problem a guy at Best Buy told me about the PowerLine adapters that use the wiring in your home to send your network connection to any outlet where you plug in a second PowerLine adapter and connect something to your network. At the time, it was over $100 and it sounded like crazy talk, so I dismissed the idea. Stupid of me bigtime.
Yes, you guessed it. After months of sitting up late reading, trying this and trying that, talking to dang technical support reps. from third world countries that have no clue how to speak English, I finally went back and purchased the PowerLine adapter.
Before I tell you how that went, one more major deal I learned along the way. Attention Comcast Customers......how about a free N router newsflash?
If you are a Comcast customer and you are using a Comcast Modem which you are charged $5 a month for like it or not, it comes with a Netgear N wireless router at no additional cost. You heard me, no additional cost. The old billing system was that Comcast charged $3 a month for the modem and $2 a month for the router. Now you are charged $5 for the modem period and it is up to you to figure out that you also get a Netgear N router at no additional cost. Isn't it funny how Comcast does not volunteer that information? No telling how many folks have gone out and purchased a router when they were already renting one from Comcast but not getting it.
OK, back to my story.
So I go home with my long overdue purchase of the PowerLine adapter. (For just $79 now.) In the box was two adapters and two Ethernet cords. They are interchangeable. I plug one into the outlet close to my FREE Netgear router from Comcast and connect the Ethernet cord from the PowerLine adapter to one of the four ports in the back of my FREE Netgear router. Then I walked upstairs and to the other end of my house to the problem Xbox and unhook the piece-of-poo Xbox N Adapter from the back of the Xbox. I took the second PowerLine adapter and plug it into the electrical outlet close to the Xbox and then connect the Ethernet cord from the Xbox to the Powerline adapter I has just plugged into the wall outlet and the lights on the PowerLine adapter came on. I am thinking that that time.....NO, it can't be connected. No way, not after all these months of trying to figure this out. My son, quickly turns on the Xbox, goes to the connection set-up screen and what did it say? Xbox Live us up and running! Hallelujah! No weak bars of signal, it was not connecting and disconnecting, that baby was direct connected via a wireless signal being sent through the power lines in my house. He quickly cranked up Modern Warefare 2 and the rest is history. Online playing bliss. No more, Dad, the Xbox kicked me off again. No more spelling my name out to a person that does not understand English. It just works.
Let my pain be your gain. Go get yours and enjoy.

GE 45227 Smart Home IntelliCorder Motion Activated Digital Door Peephole Review

GE 45227 Smart Home IntelliCorder Motion Activated Digital Door Peephole
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my IntelliCorder because I had been experiencing some hangups and increased traffic outside my apartment door. Because my apartment complex is built like a hotel with enclosed walls and a lot of lighting in the hallway plus I can't drill any holes or didn't want to deal with any wires, I thought I would be a good candidate for this device. I installed the Intellicorder through my apartment's peephole and set it to Record where it would turn on and record activity (with sound) outside my door any time someone walked in front of it. In my case, I caught an intruder picking the lock to my apartment, entering my apartment and then locking it back up upon leaving (I am ordering a Wireless Alarm as we speak). The Intellicorder's time stamp device was good b/c it was able to tell me and the Police how long the intruder was inside and to know how long it took the intruder to pick the lock. The best parts of all was the clear picture of the intruder's face, the device was undetected by the intruder and I was able to email the police copies of the recordings (and they were pretty impressed with the device!) The only bad thing I can say about the device is that the Intellicorder produces the the recordings in an .AVI format and most Windows based computers can't read/view these types of files so you have to download the free .AVI reader from the website that GE recommends in their instructions (from divx.com) and tell other people (like the Police) how to download the reader. I wish they could enhance the next version of the Intellicorder device to choose the video format you want like .mpeg. I will post my copies of the recordings once the police moves a bit further in my case against the intruder but this device was well worth the money.

I had recently purchased a "wireless" camera package from another supplier and found that they sucked. I had no product support from that seller and could not even get my money back.
I decided to pursue another product and found this one on Amazon. After reading other reviews of the product and the fact that this is a "hard wired" camera, the only way to go in my opinion, I purchased the system.
Installation was easy, and the cameras work perfectly. I was in the electronic security business for over 19 years and these cameras have picture quality close to cameras costing more than twice the amount. The support when I had a question about the product was prompt, courteous and complete. I RECOMMEND this seller and product if you are in the market for "hard wired" security cameras. For the price, this is an exceptional buy!

I purchased 2 Lorex systems for my stores, and I ended up replacing both of them within 2 years. The first system stopped working after about 6 months, and I requested a replacement mother board. It took several weeks and phone calls to finally get it from Lorex and then it did not work either. So after many more calls, they finally sent another mother board - and it was the wrong one. When I called them to send the right one - their answer "Sorry you are no longer under warranty". I sent faxes, emails, etc. to company management - no response. So
I finally had to replace this one with a Defender system.
The second one lasted about a month past warranty. I will NEVER buy another Lorex system again - poor quality and very poor customer service. I am out over
$2000 with this company.
I only gave it 1 star as it would not let me give it zero.

Nortech Security 2.4GHz Wireless Color Security System Review

Nortech Security 2.4GHz Wireless Color Security System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a few notes from an oldtechnohobbist:
I got mine a few days ago and tested it out on two VCRs (one of them was a vcr and dvd combination). Dispite 'many' failed attempts at getting the camera's receiver to record on a vhs tape--I finally succeeded. It turns out my equipment was bad--the security camera and equipment work fine. My equipment chewed up two of my classic monster movies--well, need I tell you 'that's that for them'! I chugged on down to one of those big boxes 'marts' and got a brand new Magnavox VCR/DVD player. I recommend them ($53.00) because I've had a ton of trouble with DVDs.
As an old techno, I won't take that from a machine. So I got one basically designed to take the dust coveroff so I can hand clean the Laser reader head on the DVD...it's the ONLY fix...with a Q tip and a drop of rubbing alcohol.
Now, to the reason I'm writing this review. PROS and CONS;
PROS;
1. It works fine, night and day.
2. In my ten by ten foot bedroom, in near total dark, it lights up nicely.
3. Easy to put to gether.
4. Easy to install.
5. VCR recording is simple (that's a star right there).
CONS;
1. Uses something like a 'infinity focus' so it can focus on objects a few feet away to longer distance. I feel this is a mistake, after twenty feet, the image becomes fuzzy. Even my computer camera has a 'twist' focus lense I can focus on something close, or refocus on something futher away (sharper image this way). (no loss of a star here).
2. Yes, it is in color--BUT, if you have direct sunlight it will wash out the image...making your lawn appear white. (no loss of a star here either.) You know when the sky is milky colored from smog or high humidity--with the sun behind a house but still facing the camera--and causing the sky around it to glow white--these particals of reflected light will wash out your image and change its' color.
3. When the sun starts going down, twilight, a dozen or so round holes on the camera's front light up red with LEDS. Not something you'll want to wake up to some early morning (a big red eye staring at you unblinking). -- no big thing, the diodes (LEDs) aren't bright.
4. I want all of you (who don't have one of these cameras) to remember--Wirless doesn't mean 'no wires. It means you don't run a wire to the Receiver. You still have to plug the cameras in, they are not battery operated.
5. The instructions are a little short--but direct to the point. They do not tell you how to plug it into a VCR, or that the image can be taped. (It can).
That's basically it, for now. It is worth the price, the unitssmall and kinda 21st century in looks--silver in color. As an oldtechno, I don't think you'll beat the price for quality. I have noticed the 'brick' (that's the part you plug in) does seem to get a little warm. Oh yes, as another reviewer mentioned,...you can't place these things up against a windowpane, it will reflect its' own image back when night time comes and all you will see is that 'red' eye.
Finally, the red cable plugs into the audio on the front of your VCR. The yellow cable plugs into the video (that's the other plug in on the front of your VCR--at least on my model) Your tv must be set to AV for you to get an image from the cameras on it and to record the image. If you don't understand that, it means plug the security receiver into the same place you plug a camcorder.
If anything comes up, I'll post it below here.
BYE!

D-Link DCS-1130 mydlink enabled Wireless N Fixed IP Network Camera with Built-In Microphone Review

D-Link DCS-1130 mydlink enabled Wireless N Fixed IP Network Camera with Built-In Microphone
Average Reviews:

I bought this camera along with the Panasonic wireless to test out.
I was able to set up the dlink wireless camera in just a few minutes and view on the internet. (Panasonic took a lot longer but instructions on the review were great help!)
At first I thought this camera was horrible because the picture was so blurry.
I figured out that I had to turn the front lens to get it clear and was impressed with the picture. :)
I have not had to mess with it since then and the camera works well.
I have motion detection setup and every time someone comes up to my front door or walks in my front yard I receive a picture in my email. I think it is very cool and the picture is pretty nice.
One thing you cannot do with this camera that you can do with the Panasonic is control movement from the internet but I am ok with that. Also, I sometimes try to connect to my camera via mydlink and the connection is broken.
I haven't had time to figure that out yet but I suspect it has something to do with comcast.
I do still receive the motion detection emails even when I cannot connect to the camera over the internet from work so I know its setup issue.
Sound is also quite clear!
I do not think it is fair for the other reviewer to give this 1 star because it doesn't work on their iphone so I am giving it 5 stars :D
I can understand the frustration they may have. Maybe you can ask dlink support for assistance?
P.S. dlink support was supportive when I had a question about ports to set up with motion detection.
They did only have to direct me to comcast support which took multiple calls and finally on third call I got a port that worked and emails from motion detection are now sent out using comcast email.
Port is 587 for comcast smtp setup.
All in all it is a pretty decent camera.

SVAT CV31 Hi-Res Outdoor CCD Security Camera w/Long Range Night Vision Review

SVAT CV31 Hi-Res Outdoor CCD Security Camera w/Long Range Night Vision
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been experimenting with a few low-end security cameras. This camera is in the mid-price range of the cameras I have tried. It also delivers mid-range results. You get what you pay for I guess. The only reason I give this camera 4 stars is that it seems like a bargain for $75. I'm sure it is not a great camera compared to some of the pricier models. I have compared it side by side to the Q-See QSC48030 and I was not very impressed with SVAT when compared to the Q-See. On the other hand, the SVAT is much better than the X-10 camera line, especially in dim light or at night. The SVAT is a bit oversized, which may be good if you are mainly trying to create a deterrent. But the camera feels a bit flimsy and hollow to me. One of the power units I received was defective and that might have rendered the camera useless had I not been able to replace the power unit. The SVAT does have a few infrared LEDs for night-vision, but the illumination is quite dim, and you probably won't get enough illumination for security purposes beyond about 10 or 15 feet. The camera is much sharper than X-10 cameras, but not as sharp as a Q-See camera. The sharpness issue is most apparent in dim lighting and at night. The camera is surprisingly bright in very dim lighting situations, like right before dark, and at first light. This camera has a minor problem with color imaging -- I have noticed a pinkish cast to images at certain times of the day. If money is tight, or you are using this camera in a not-too-critical situation, the SVAT might be a good choice. But if you can afford it, I recommend splurging on the Q-See model mentioned above. Right now, I think the price difference is only about $40.

TRENDnet ProView PoE Internet Surveillance Camera with 16x Digital Zoom TV-IP512P (White) Review

TRENDnet ProView PoE Internet Surveillance Camera with 16x Digital Zoom TV-IP512P (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by stating that I had to return this IP camera. The major reason is that it does not have exposure compensation and it has a manual focus. It is configured for indoor ambient light settings. Not too bright and not too dim. I also realized that the camera/CCD chip does not have a sufficient dynamic range to capure a scene with both bright and dard areas. If this is a requirement, then this camera will not perform for you.
The Trendnet software does provide image brightness controls but the controls appear to operate on the received image not setting the camera's exposure settings. Hence an over exposed image will remain overexposed.
TrendNet has Setup program on the CD which installs a setup program! This is rather confusing. Installation is clumsy but with patience, I got it configured. The Power over Ethernet worked perfectly.
Based on physical construction, including the pacement of the connectors, the TrendNet Camera appears to be a Dlink camera. In fact using Blue Iris Video Monitoring software, the camera responds as if it is a DLink DCS-3410 or 2102.
The focus is manual. A real PITA when you must mount it and then have someone monitor the video and keep farting with the focus. And given the 1-2 second delay in the video, its easy to keep missing the focus point.
Trendnet also provides a simple but good mounting bracket.
I also tried out their user support. I connected to a person relatively quickly. I offer them the opportunity to the tech support person to connect directly to the camera remotely which they declined (I configured port forwarding on my router). Their first fix for the over exposure was to place the camera in night mode!! What?? That would make it even more over exposed! They ignored my comment. Put me on hold and when they came back and she said it can't be used for viewing outside.
Perhaps I've been spoiled by the Toshiba line of IP cameras. They are a lot more expensive, but their engineering, software and hardware is top notch compared to TrendNet. So if your needs are for video where the lighting does not vary much from ambient indoor lighting, and you can only afford $200, this camera may work for you.

Levana BABYVIEW20 Interference-Free Digital Wireless Video Baby Monitor with Night Light Lullaby Camera Review

Levana BABYVIEW20 Interference-Free Digital Wireless Video Baby Monitor with Night Light Lullaby Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I got our first video monitor, I wondered if it would be useful, or just a gimmick, or one more way to worry about the baby! We've found it very useful. There are just some things that an audio monitor can't tell you. And being able to check on your child without the disturbance of going into her room can save a lot of trouble, especially in the transition times in the evening and in the morning, when little disturbances can lead to bigger ones.
The video was especially useful when our child was a little older and moving around more, and we had left her to settle herself - which sometimes can seem like crying herself to sleep! :-( We used the video monitor to see if she was just unsettled (so we very much did not want to go into the room, or she wouldn't learn to settle herself) or had gotten into a spot she couldn't get out of (stuck in the bars of the crib, or lost her lovey, so we needed to go in and set things right). Video monitors are also useful to see when a child is awake, and how awake - sitting, standing, lying down or trying to climb out of bed! - or on her way to sleep, or not. And they can be lots of fun, too, to watch and listen!
Our other monitor is analog, and once in a while we'd hear our neighbor talking on their cordless phone - which no doubt means they hear us sometimes!A digital monitor, like the Levana, should be private and static-free.
So, I really wanted to like this product. Plus, I really needed it when a new baby arrived. But while it has an attractive design and some interesting features, the Levana Babyview monitor doesn't seem especially workable or useful for us.
The main issue, of course, is the video and audio quality. Both are problematic on the Levana BabyView:
Video: The video quality seems barely adequate. The resolution on the baby's face is OK, but just. The frame rate seems too low - you don't get anything like continuous motion. Every several seconds, the video freezes. From time to time, it freezes for a much longer time. The video compression used results in a blocky, low resolution quality, though luckily that primarily affects low-contrast areas. Overall it's tolerable but not especially enjoyable to use, and lower quality most of the time than our analog monitor.
Audio: The audio had a persistent high pitched background whine when it was on. Also, it's apparently set to switch off and on at low volumes, so the audio is intermittent with lots of clicks, which is less than useful and more than irritating. The tiny microphone is in an odd location on the camera, it almost seems like an afterthought, perhaps that's part of the problem. Overall, much lower quality than our analog monitor.
Further, the user should be able to better control the audio - have a microphone that picks up even low level sounds, and have a volume control on the handset that you can adjust; then the user can decide what to hear. Good quality audio can add a lot of information to how the child is doing. You don't want to lose audio quality to get video - a monitor like this should have good quality audio and video.
Some aspects of the Babyview are well done:
- The design is fairly attractive and compact. (Handset is 5.8" H with the antenna x 1" deep without the clip x 2.5" wide.)
- The 2.3" screen is reasonably large.
- The auto-switching between regular light and night vision seems to happen quickly and effectively.
- The lithium ion battery in the handset is the best battery technology, in terms of power for the weight. (It's what's used in digital cameras and cell phones.) They claim over 4 hours of battery life.
- The power adapters work at US or international voltages.
- The included clamp for the camera is well made and seems likely to work well in a variety of setups.
Other features are good ideas that don't work well in practice:
- The voice activation feature, which leaves the screen and the sound off until it picks up some sound, helps conserve battery and perhaps parents' nerves and sleep. But it needs too much noise to switch on - it's either set to too low a level, or the microphone isn't sensitive enough. And again, this is something that the user should be able to adjust.
- The little curved base is clever, but doesn't work that well at the optimum focal range of 5 feet. When placed on a dresser next to the crib with the camera is tilted down enough to see the baby, the base blocks a big part of the image. In addition, when the camera is in the base, the camera starts to tilt due to the heavy filter on the power supply wire (a biggish black cylindrical part on the wire). So for both those reasons, the cute clever magnetic base isn't much use in practice.
Some of the features seem potentially nice but I'm not sure I'd use them - such as the nightlight and the music. I almost wonder if they added them to distinguish this product from their security cameras.
Finally, there are a couple elements of the design that aren't so great. Having a bright green power LED on the front of the camera is thoughtless on a baby monitor, though luckily it's easy enough to tape over (and there are so many lovely colors of electrical tape these days). And the glowing red night vision lights seem to have too much potential for distracting or even upsetting a child.
The wireless frequency is 2.4ghz, the same as wireless internet and some cordless phones. The Levana has enough channels (32, with auto signal hopping) that intereference shouldn't be a major problem, but I can't definitely evaluate that at this point.
The company's website is [...], though there's very little info there. Their parent company is SVAT Electronics, which makes security cameras and the like. So even though this is a new product from an unknown brand, they do have experience with this sort of thing. Perhaps their next generation of this product will have some of the wrinkles ironed out.

This product does what it advertises. It works great for fixed distances of 1, 2, or 3 feet, but 2'6" is out of the question. There are numerous products that do adjustable ranges, but they are not as reliable as this fixed distance product.

SE-0306OR Alarm Combo. Orange/white Review

These are terrific! I use the armband alarm when I am walking / jogging in the evening, even in my suburban neighborhood. The smaller wrist alarm is great for when I am going to the car or walking back to my hotel at night when I am travelling for work, especially in unfamiliar cities. The alarm is much louder than any whistle I've come across, and the light helps any would-be rescuers find where the sound is coming from. I am planning to buy a set for my mom and my sister too.

Schlage LiNK Wireless Keypad Deadbolt Starter Kit System, Bright Brass Review

Schlage LiNK Wireless Keypad Deadbolt Starter Kit System, Bright Brass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just purchased the Schlage Link from amazon.com, got it yesterday, and followed the instructions exactly. Watch out. It's a trainwreck. Here's the rundown step by step:
1. After pairing the bridge to my schlage lock and lamp module, I went online to register. Before you can do ANYTHING, before you can even test that the box is working, you must give them a credit card which they charge up front and enroll you in a monthly subscription. You can't do anything without paying them monthly, and there's no trial period or anything to see that the device works before you enroll. And they told me on the phone this subscription enrollment is non-refundable even if the device doesn't work and I return it to Amazon. So, the bottom line is, I had to start paying them up front just to find out that the product is totally broken.
2. When you try to pay them, the web browser (firefox) gives warnings that Schlage's online security certificate is not properly setup. The only way to proceed is to click "exceptions", even though Firefox warns you that you should never do this and no legitimate company will ask you to. Screen shot attached. If Schlage doesn't even have the technical skills to secure their online credit card page and keep my credit card safe, something every mom and pop etailer can do, how on earth do they expect me to trust that their lock entry system is safe? Clearly they don't trust themselves since, the first step of the online process, requires you to accept terms and conditions that waive any responsibility on their part, even if they are negligent.
3. During the setup I chose to have them send the cell phone app to my Blackberry. The cell phone app, also, does not have a security certificate and the Blackberry warns you that it's unsigned and untrusted.
4. Right now, you cannot use the Schlage link with ANY cameras or thermostats or sensors or scene controllers or handheld remotes or any of the other hundreds of ZWaves devices out there, except basic lamp modules. Schlage confirmed this when I called their support line. They said that in a few months they will sell a Schlage brand camera and it will work with their camera, but not with 3rd party IP cameras. So my Panasonic IP cameras will not work at all and I have to buy all new Schlage cameras; which, btw, don't appear to have pan/tilt/audio and other stuff like the Panasonic.
5. At this point I've resigned that this bridge will, basically, just allow me to control the Schlage lock, and for everything else I will need another gateway. But, wait, it gets worse. The web interface at Schlage's site says my bridge is disconnected. But that's wrong. It ---IS--- connected. And I can login to my dhcp server and see that it's getting an IP. So it is plugged in and working. There is NOTHING in Schlage's documentation to explain this. The green light on the bridge is blinking 3 times. But there is nothing to indicate if this is normal, or an error. So I call Schlage's customer support line. I get bounced around between low level operators who know nothing more than to read trouble shooting guides. They ask stupid questions that prove they don't know what they're talking about. They ask me to try removing/reinserting the ethernet cable. At this point the bridge locks up; all the lights stop working. We need to remove the battery to get it working again. Then we need to exclude and pair again the lock and lamp module. Still nothing. They tell me to get a longer ethernet cable (mine is 6') so I can move the Schlage bridge further from my network router. Huh??? It's not a wi-fi device, it's hardwired. What's that about? They can't give me a technical explanation, just saying it's on their trouble shooting guide that the Schlage should not be too close to the router. After an hour on the phone, they say that an engineer will need to look into it and get back to me. They can't give me a timetable. And they don't have any answer about getting back the money they charged me up front for their subscription.
Bottom line: the lock works as a lock. You can lock/unlock it with a key and with the pin pad. But the bridge is a joke. It doesn't work at all. And it's impossible to troubleshoot because, although the bridge gets an IP address, it doesn't run a web server or telnet or anything else to let you log into the bridge itself and see what's wrong. All you can do is login through schlage.com and see that "the bridge is disconnected". Therefore, without a way to talk to the bridge locally on my network, and with the bridge unable to connect to schalge's online service, I seriously doubt they'll ever be able to get it working and imagine it's just a black brick. After all, if the Schlage bridge is too buggy to get a network connection and find the Schlage server, how will it ever upgrade, since there's no way for me to talk to it over my local network.
The part that pisses me off the most is that I had to pay up front for their stupid subscription just to find out this thing doesn't work and can't get my money back! So watch out!
