we got this system for our home. The installation is easy enough if you dont mind taking lots of time running the cords so you dont run them over with a lawnmower or weed eater lol. Make sure you have long enough cords. And if you have to buy extra, you need to buy the adapters that connect them together. I suggest getting a wireless system if you dont have a lot of time or no one else to run the cords for you. The set up is easy to understand however. The picture quality is ok. Not the best but it works good enough. The night vision is ok too. Does the job. The dvr is hard to learn how to use. Now that I looked around I think I could have gotten it a little cheaper somewhere else. Oh well, we needed it asap.

If you have a 4 button ademco keyfob, chances are you have at least 1 extra button (normally there are buttons for off, on, panic, and then you run out of things to do). That 4th button activates this switch which has a normally open / normally closed output rated at 2A / 28VDC. The switch itself requires 9VAC or 12VDC to run, so be sure to have voltage present to operate it.
People often mistake that it can be programmed to operate from the 5800 series transmitter on your panel. IT CAN NOT. It only listens for unused buttons on the wireless devices (keypad, etc) and can enroll up to 8 devices to activate its one relay out.
I use it for a keychain mounted controller to my electric gate - it gives me a handheld way to open the gate in addition to the pushbutton in car garage door opener design. It is handy if I am walking into a secure area and wish to open the gate partway to walk through then close it behind me and engage the 1200 pound mag locks to secure the gate.
Programming of that 4th button in your panel is an option as well (you could have it turn on lighs via x11 or some other feature) but be certain that the panel's receiver can hear your keyfob where you intend to use it. Consult the ademco vista series programming manual for further instructions here.

Schlage LiNK Wireless Keypad Entry Lever Add-on Lock, Aged Bronze Review

Schlage LiNK Wireless Keypad Entry Lever Add-on Lock, Aged Bronze
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed these locks on my front and garage door a week ago and surprisingly it has been working flawlessly. I am using (Support Challenged) Micasa Verde Vera as Z-Wave gateway since it's too difficult for me to understand why to pay monthly costs to a service provider when I can do it for free with little or no learning but some patience. Here's my feedback and ovservation so far
Looks: Nice, I have brass and matches with other locks in the house from Schlage
Built: Typical Schlage - good
Adding it to Z-wave network "With Vera": Easy enough but I have go through an upgrade and plug-in
Adding Codes: I can add codes "4 Digit" only with names including the ability to control the day and time when the code will be active - example Maid Service or a Nanny who is about to retire. You cannot edit/modify the code but you can remove and re-add.
Lock/Unlock: From outside all you have to do is to enter your code, making sure, no one is watching with binoculars and you will hear a click and green LED. Turn the knob and it will open. To Close just hit the "Schlage" button after you turn the knob to lock. And yes it does not rotate the knob by itself like other model of Schlage but that is non-Zwave device. You can also use traditional keys to open or close. At night you can press the Schlage button first to illuminate the keys before entering the code - helpful.
Battery and battery life: It comes with 3xAA and 1x9 Volt battery and advertized life is too long to believe but so far I did not see even 1% drop after a week's use.
Status and Remote Operation: You can always see the status of the lock as "Lock" or "Unlock" from any web-browser/iPhone etc. Operate it from anywhere to let someone in.
Notification: You can program using Zwave gateway to send you notification Via SMS/Email alert case a particular code is used OR wrong code is used.
Fun/Programming: Being Z-wave you can trigger several events when a particular code is used including but not limited to switching on lights case it's dark or start thermostat to cool/heat your home. Each of these events require additional hardware/device or a module.
Security: Schlage lock and your Z-wave gate will secure the transmission over RF (Radio Frequency) using encryption keys (digital keys - something similar to when you access your bank over SSL/https web browser). This is from what I have read so far before purchasing and so far I am convinced that it is easier to find someone's keys under the doormat as compared to hacking the security of the lock with the exception of those binoculars or being careless to use easy numbers like 1234 (as my 5 year suggested me :-) for his code)
Elderly/Disabled: Terrific use to avoid going to the door to let someone in. Can combine with a motion sensor and an IP Camera to know who is at the door before clicking unlock.
Cons:
-Not a motorized lock. Case you forget all you can do is to program Z-Wave gate to remind you that door is still unlocked
-Incoming traffic is logged and you know when someone is coming in but there Is no way possible to know when someone leaves
-One more thing in life to make you couch potato especially when you combine with a motion sensor and an IP Camera at your front door.
Hope you'll find what you're looking for. Additionally Kwickset also announced series of upcoming product based on this technology. Competition may bring the price down - possibly.

This product is being sold without the necessary extension cord, so one cannot use it immediately upon receipt. It only uses a proprietory extension cord which is not offered with the product. I had to contact the makers to find out. Both the makers and retailers would do good to inform the customers ahead of time that they need and should purchase the extension cord together with the camera. I was unable to operate the camera, so I cannot comment on its performance.

SVAT CV300-4CH-001 User Friendly Web Ready 4 Channel DVR Security System with 4 Indoor/Outdoor Weatherproof Night Vision Surveillance Cameras Review

SVAT CV300-4CH-001 User Friendly Web Ready 4 Channel DVR Security System with 4 Indoor/Outdoor Weatherproof Night Vision Surveillance Cameras
Average Reviews:

I purchased this item in June 2010 and paid $399.
The product was easy to install, but only if you use the wires provided with the kit (comes with 60' per camera). The down side of using the included wires is, you must install the wires. My house was pre-wired for security cameras, but the pre-wiring used CAT5 and COAX so I had to create custom 4-pin DIN connectors. Creating custom DIN connectors required a great deal of soldering and heat shrinking, but it beat crawling through the attic and running wires through walls.
The cameras are decent, with okay resolution and okay frames-per-second (FPS). They only have a 60 degree range of view, so 4 cameras provides limited views.
The DVR is very disappointing. This system uses a single-function DVR, which means you can only do one thing at a time (either play back or record), but you cannot view the video if the unit is currently recording (you have to stop recording). The DVR also only supports a max of 30 FPS across all 4 channels/cameras. I allocated 10, 10, 5 and 5. The DVR also has poor resolution - maybe its the cameras, but I think its the DVR because the live video is much clearer than the recorded video. In addition, the DVR is rather cheap. I attempted to format the hard drive when I first installed it the unit, but got a message that there "was no hard drive." After hours of fussing with it, I finally just unplugged it for 30 minutes or so; after which it detected the hard drive and allowed me to format.
Connecting to the DVR: You can connect to the DVR in one of 2 ways - via a USB cable or via a network (including the internet). Connecting to an internal network (e.g., home network) is fairly simple, and can be done in a few minutes. Configuration for external network (e.g., internet) access is a bit more complicated. I eventually figured it out, thanks to some helpful websites, but it took 2 or 3 hours before I got it working. If you plan on accessing the DVR from your network, you cannot have the DVR connected via the USB too (not at the same time). When the USB is connected, the hard drive is "in use" by the computer connected via USB, and thus, other computers can only view live video - cannot playback recorded video.Of course, this is not explained in the manual and is definitely not obvious when logged in from a remote computer.
Software and Play back: To play back recorded video, you need the software (DxClient). There are two ways to access/use this software. One is to install it on your computer (requires Windows - sorry Mac users). The other is to use an Active-X control in Internet Explorer (sorry, but it doesn't work with Firefox). Either way works fine. The software (user interface) is straight forward, but it's also confusing. To playback video, you click an icon to bring up a play list, then select the video you want to play. The problem is, mine only shows one play list and when I click it, I can't tell if I'm playing a recording or watching live footage. Thus, either the software is buggy or the DVR is not recording; either way very disappointing.
Since this is my first surveillance system, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, I am not very satisfied with with this purchase. If I had to do it over again, I would have done more research before buying and would have paid more for a higher quality system.

Q-See QSDNV Indoor Dome CMOS Camera w/Night Vision (Color)
Average Reviews:

Picture quality, construction quality, Night Vision, and Field of Vision are all a letdown and I returned it right away. For the price, I suppose this is still a good "deal", but if you want an excellent quality Dome Camera with decent Night Vision, superb build quality, and a wide angle view look at the unit labeled "vandal proof dome camera", also from Amazon. It is more expensive, but has a VERY hefty and sturdy feel to it. Range of IR is greater and MUCH less granulated, resolution in daytime is fantastic, and one unit in the corner of a square room or backyard can cover nearly everything. This product may be adequate for some applications, just be aware that it is very low-end. (I suppose I should give credit that it also includes audio, but given that this is advertised as an "indoor camera" one would wish for a much wider field of vision.)

OPEN HOUSE H838BID 3 x 8 Video Distribution System with Infrared Engine Review

OPEN HOUSE H838BID 3 x 8 Video Distribution System with Infrared Engine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Open House line of networking/telephony products is an excellent entry level line if you're looking to network/wire your own home.

I've been consistently using them since 2001 and have had little to no problem with the entire line.

Per the other reviewers comments about power surges, I've never had that issue with any of the 3 (1 HHR and 2 BID's) I own. I've also only used them in new construction where the grounding of the electrical system is adequate.
Note, if you have a box from your cable company that requires two-way communication back to them (eg... Pay Per View, On-Demand) then you must have the H838BID and not the H838HHR. The BID model is bi-directional which means the cable box can talk back to the cable company computers.
If you are looking for just the cable splitter aspect then the HHR model is fine, and works well for DirectTV or Dish where the communication is one-way only. That being said you can find 8-way cable splitters much cheaper than these around the net.

The OpenHouse products also perform signal amplification which is why they cost more than your standard splitter. You can also inject a second video feed (eg. Security Camera) into your cable lines using Open Houses channel injector. This will allow you to view your security cameras on Channel 1.
All-in-All I haven't found another integrated system that comes in near the $ value for what you get from the Open House products.

Seemed well built. Rolls has a good reputation. I ordered this unit for use with a stereo mic pair, but was disappointed you can't use it with just one mic and one battery. Probably in my case it would be better to get two single units--more flexible use. Also, the unit I received had one channel very noisy. I can't comment on how quiet the unit is when performing up to specs. Couldn't recommend unless using all the time for stereo. Returned the unit for refund.

Panasonic Wireless 802.11 b/g Network Camera and Pet Cam (BL-C30A) Review

Panasonic Wireless 802.11 b/g Network Camera and Pet Cam (BL-C30A)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Panasonic BL-C30A is a wireless camera with embedded web server. It can be connected to your home network through an ethernet cable or wirelessly (the initial setup has to be performed through the ethernet connection). Once you've properly configured it for wireless mode, you don't need a computer: just plug the power adapter into an outlet and place the camera wherever you want (within the range of your wireless network).
Anyone can connect and view/control the camera remotely. If you have a broadband connection and know how to configure your router to open a port and assign it to the camera's IP address, you can see your webcam from anywhere in the world. Very handy to keep an eye on your office or empty apartment while you're away.
The embedded web server supports access restrictions through passwords of course; and users can pan/tilt the camera lens -- the only drawback is that Internet Explorer is required to use the camera (the display and controls are handled through an ActiveX control, which basically means that only Windows PCs with IE will be able to use access it).
Image quality is pretty good: you have a choice of straming video at 320x240 or 640x480 (at a reduced frame rate) and you can control brightness and video quality from remote. Users can also take 'snapshots' (i.e. save individual images).

I have another wireless webcam (a Linksys WVC11B) and the Panasonic's image quality and features are definitely superior (on the other hand the Linksys is also $100 cheaper).
The camera also offers additional advanced features like heat detection (which can turn the camera on automatically and send an email alert if someone, or something, warm gets within the sensor's range) and scripting. I've never used this, but I suppose it can be useful if you plan to set up the camera as part of a rudimentary security/surveillance system. Some cameras offer motion detection, but it can be triggered by changes in light -- heat detection seems to make more sense.
Main caveat: configuration can be tough, especially if you're a newbie. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable and it still took me a while to get it work with my wireless network until I figured out that I had to set the WEP encryption mode to 'open key' on my wireless access point (shared key mode is not supported, though this fact is buried in the documentation).
Overall, I recommend the BL-C30A but I wish Panasonic provided a way for non-IE users to access the camera (and the configuration software could also be vastly improved).

It was easy to install, once I reviewed my alarm system installation docs along with the instructions on the remote touchpad. Comes very handy if you cannot place your alarm panel next to your exit door, or if you have multiple exits from your house. Just attached it with velkro on the door, so it doesn't get lost. Even though it is not listed as such, it seems compatible with my Simon 2, and it was more affordable than the other options.

I have been using X10 products many years including this sensor. It works good, is low cost, but only last about 1.5 years outside. The exposure to the sun and other weather conditions takes it toll. However, with many systems there is a maintenance factor involved and here in means replacing the sensors every 1.5 years or so. Although it is sensitive, it works well, and I will keep on using it. A word of advice is to buy this sensor with other items in larger quantities directly through X10, as they often offer good rebates. I bought it through Amazon this time, as I needed it fast.
