Homeland Security 897N 2.4 GHz Wireless Color Waterproof Camera and Receiver Review

Homeland Security 897N 2.4 GHz Wireless Color Waterproof Camera and Receiver

I was so excited when I purchased this product at Wal-Mart, and sooooooo disappointed when I got it home and took it out of the box. Setup was easy enough and straightforward. You have 3 different channels to select from. Set the receiver and transmitter on the same channel and plug the receiver into a video input on your TV and you are ready to watch a jumpy picture, full of lines. My first test was with the receiver about 25 feet apart with the 1 wall between them. The picture jumped around and had a scrolling line constantly moving up the screen.
My next test was to take it to the basement where I have about 30 feet of unobstructed, line of site view between the receiver and transmitter.
Result: the picture still had so much static and rolling lines that the motion detection system I had it hooked up to was constantly activated even when there was nothing in front of the camera.
I would have packed it up and taken it back that night, but I don't think I could make two trips to Wal-Mart in the same 24-hour period.
In all fairness, I do have the following working against the camera:
1. Wireless network that runs in 2.4GZ range
2. A cordless phone that runs in the 2.4GZ range
3. Live in a city, but not that heavily populated
I was quite surprised that the camera did not work in my basement, because it is no where near my wireless network or my cordless phone.
Recommendation: If you live in the country, don't have a wireless network, don't have a motion detection system, or don't have a cordless phone that operates in the 2.4Gz range, then you might give this product a try. If you do, make sure you purchase it from a retailer that has a somewhat liberal return policy.
A better bet might be an IP camera from wireless manufacturer like D-Link. Wireless IP cameras have the advantage of security and digital control.

I bought this to replace another camera which was a few years old. The price for this camera is really cheap, compared to other similar cameras. But it is not so cheap for no reason. You got what you paid for. It is not providing a sharp enough picture to distinguish any facial features to deal with acts of vandalism in my neighborhood. My $49 first alert system produced clearer pictures with better facial recognition.
Well, I paid $45 for a lesson. Hope you do not.

Astak MPEG-4 Pan & Tilt IP Camera Monitoring System with Night Vision Review

Astak MPEG-4 Pan and Tilt IP Camera Monitoring System with Night Vision
Average Reviews:

I purchased this unit as a second camera. I already own another camera made by the same company called the "Mole," and assumed that this would be similar. The mole is a very good looking camera and produces sharp images.
This camera is quite ugly and produced very blurry images. Even worse, there's some text at the top of the video image (that shows the date, time, and framrate) and the text is constantly updating (i.e., changing the frame rate from 30.1 to 30.2 and back). Whenever that happens the entire bar flashes and it is very annoying. I'm sending this one back to Amazon.com.

I purchased a Genie screw garage door opener about 5-7 years ago and had to replace it this last weekend. The manufactured date is stamped on the side of the unit and although it was built within the past 8 years they will not honor their 15 year warranty without a receipt. I didn't think it would go bad within the 15 years and didn't keep the receipt. I will purchase a competitor next time.

Skylink G6K Keypad Transmitter Review

Skylink G6K Keypad Transmitter

We bought one of these plus the SmartButton and two visor remotes in order to make our 1992 garage door opener more secure. All pieces were extremely easy to set-up, and continue to work flawlessly several weeks later. The hardest thing for me to handle wasn't the Skylink bits and pieces above, but disabling the receiver on my old garage door opener. Make sure you do disable it or the Bad Guys can get around you new high-security Skylink system by simply scanning for your old 1990s receiver dip switch code. Provided you disable your existing remote receiver circuit, this solution is an amazingly cost effective way of adding modern encryption to your existing gate or garage door. Highly recommended.

Fellowes MS-460Ci 100% Jam Proof Micro-Cut Shredder (32406) Review

Fellowes MS-460Ci 100% Jam Proof Micro-Cut Shredder (32406)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very nice shredder. Purchased for home office use it is probably not stressed too much so I cannot really comment about durability to any great extent, but in terms of power, features, and size, it far exceeds the other shredders that we have used. It is a large shredder by home standards, about the height/width of an old full tower computer case but deeper so you do have to find a place for it. It has wheels so it can be moved about easily because it is pretty heavy duty, which is a plus of course. There are all sorts of cool features such as a sensor that tells you if you've put in too much/little paper to maximize your shredding with an 8-position LED scale. It also has a sensor bar that turns off the shredder if anyone physically touches the opening-a plus for kids/pets. One of the things I like best is the microcut style and large basket. Our last Ativa shredder was a crosscut style but the shreddings would not "nest" well in the smallish basket and it would quickly fill up and the shredder would get already-shredded pieces going back in to the teeth because they weren't falling away far enough into the bin. It was a constant pulling off the shredder to push down the clippings. This shredder experiences none of that because the clippings are so small they easily fall to the bottom of the large bin and emptying the bin is much less frequent. Some other features are that it will tell you when you need to oil it, it has a cd slot, etc., etc. It's not cheap, but after some less than stellar performances from cheaper past products, we decided it was worth it. All in all, very happy with the purchase.

Ideacentre H405 500GB Review

Ideacentre H405 500GB
Average Reviews:

This is one of three identical computers except for the amount of memory. This one has 3GB, the Lenovo Ideacentre H405 77231AU Desktop (Black) has 2GB, and the Lenovo Ideacentre H405 77231EU Desktop (Black) has 4GB... but they were both out of stock when I ordered. There's also 4GB and 6GB versions with a hard drive twice as big and a quad-core processor (rather than dual-core). If you're not familiar with Lenovo, it's a Chinese company (formerly "Legend") that bought IBM's PC division and they seem to be holding up the IBM reputation for quality workmanship. Oddly enough, this "H405" series doesn't appear on Lenovo's website, but I confirmed through their customer support that this is a genuine Lenovo product line.
Hardware quality is great, typical for Lenovo desktops, and the fans are very quiet. About the only weak point is the keyboard, which feels to me like a laptop keyboard rather than a desktop keyboard. But since I bought this computer to use in a "home theater" setup, I added a wireless keyboard and mouse so I didn't care what keyboard/mouse came with the computer. The hard drive in my unit is a Seagate Barracuda.
One great feature, especially for home theater use, is the HDMI output. You can just plug it directly into any modern TV (HDMI cable not included). It has the standard VGA-type monitor connector also. The universal memory card reader is nice also, positioned on the front along with the usual front jacks (2 USB, headphone, and mic). Having the power button on the top is a little odd.
Comes with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and minimal bloatware (uninstall the antivirus "trial" and use something free like Microsoft Security Essentials instead). It does have some weird Lenovo stuff that only works if you have a webcam, but you can uninstall it (or just run it and tell it not to run anymore). Be sure to make the recovery discs first thing in case anything goes wrong!
Although I'm using it for home theater, it would also make a great desktop computer for a student or any casual computer user who wants a solid, reliable, quiet computer with nothing fancy. A heavy gamer or CAD user would probably want something with more expandability and more powerful graphics... but they'd have to pay a lot more for that.

D-Link 4-Port Wireless-G 54Mbps Router Review

D-Link 4-Port Wireless-G 54Mbps Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this item for "free" as a promotion. Free, it's not, having cost me literally hours of troubleshooting. I have installed the latest firmware, 1.04 A1.
1) Hangs up for minutes at a time, seemingly randomly. You have to power cycle, or wait and it MAY recover.
2) Randomly won't let you log in, keeping you at the login screen. Have to power cycle, or reset to factory settings. In the latter case, you lose all your settings. This bug is reported consistently in forums you can find with a web search.
3) Many features are incompatible with wireless clients that work perfectly with other wireless routers. WEP and WPA would not work with two of my wireless cards. Auto Channel Scan fails in conjunction with WEP. It took a full afternoon of experimentation to discover which features are compatible with each other and with various clients. In the end, I had to use MAC filtering to enable any type of security that would work for all clients.
5) Static (in range) IP addresses fail for every client, while the router provides no way to link MAC addresses to a particular IP. This renders port forwarding useless.
5) Web interface and documentation is unclear and full of errors, from misspellings to inconsistent terminology to factual errors. The overall impression is of sloppy, haphazard engineering.
6) Technical support is provided by very polite folks in India, who will run you through their standard procedure over and over without actually solving the problem.
If you want a router that works, or if your time is worth anything, then don't buy this one.

Genie 1022 1/2-Horsepower AC ChainLift Garage Door Opener
Average Reviews:

I just installed the Genie 1022 as a replacement for the second Craftsman that died an early death. It was very simple to install and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. It's quieter than any chain driven opener I've ever seen and has a smooth start and stop. My only minor complaint (and it's mostly because of my short, stubby fingers) is that the wire connector on the unit could be larger to make it easier to feed the wire ends into it.

Ooma Scout (to use with Ooma Hub VoIP Phone Device) Review

Ooma Scout (to use with Ooma Hub VoIP Phone Device)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You obviously have or are buying a hub. Should you buy a scout too? I didn't initially... and they were on a different price plan (less expensive) then. I should have. But they recently extended the functionality of these little boxes and I bought 2. Bottom line - for an additional $60, you get a second IN and OUT line and separate phone number (if you subscribe to premier or are grandfathered in with their old - expensive) price point. I am an 'old' one. I didn't get one initially. With the scouts you can play voice mail from the scout. Handy because I have the hub, buried in a cabinet. you can assign a separate phone number ring to that device. It provides, potentially another place to plug another cordless set of handsets.
Configuration is very easy and very difficult at the same time. They provide an 'idiot proof' guide in their documents. And all works as they say it will. Here's the problems... (and they are not really OOMA's problems).
1. I have a large home. I don't want to buy a scout for each room. Most cordless devices provide only 4 and sometimes 5 handsets. That may be enough. You can use the scout to extend that and plug in another set of cordless handsets into it... but that is ONLY if you don't use the separate phone line with the scout.
2. Their functionality as of the writing of this does not allow you to move your second phone number to the scout alone. If you set it up as a shared device (which I, unfortunately did), you can't move it. So for now, all the scouts ring as does the hub for either number. They say 2-3 weeks for software deployment for moving numbers to a specific device. If you do that, the second cordless for the first line is out. the handsets applicable to this will ring only on that second line.
3. To avoid the handset issue, I 'backwired' my home. I plugged the OUTPUT of the HUB into LINE 1 of my home. (on any phone plug, called an RJ-11 jack there is a maximum of 6 wires. Most jacks and most wires are wired with 2 or 4 wires. Look at the plug on your cord. How many copper tips are there? The center 2 are for line 1. The next two are for line 2 and so on. Thus for wires 1,2,3,4,5,6 - 34 are for line 1, 25 are for line 2 and 16 are for line 3. Most newer homes have at LEAST what they call THREE PAIR wires. (that's three pairs of wires) run through the house. Most have 5 pair. The standard convention are blue/white for line 1, orange/white for line 2 and green white for line 3.
Here's where the fun comes in. By backwiring your home, you can distribute the ooma hub to every jack in the house. But that's not in their manual and it would conflict with how they recommend you hook up the scout. In my situation, the OUT of the hub goes to line 1 wiring in the house. In their directions, the hub IN (wall) jack is plugged into line 1 and the scouts pick up the hub signal from any jack.
You can get around this this way:
a. get several line splitter jacks from radio shack. They usually have three plugs labled (1+2, 1 and 2). Thus, the 1+2 acts like a normal jack. The 1 is line 1 only and the 2 is line 2. Plug one of these jacks into a house wiring jack. Plug the IN of the hub (wall) into the LINE 2 of the adapter. Now, the scout signal will be distributed through the house on the line 2 wiring.
For each scout you will need a similar jack converter and just plug it in to the line 2 jack as noted above. Use the line 1 part of the jack for your regular phone (where you will find the OOMA dial tone).
= = = a caveat. Many homes do not have the wires RUNNING THROUGH each wall jack. That is they may not be connected at the jack. If they are not, everything 'downstream' of the disconnection will not work. Most of the newer homes I have seen have all three line wires connected all the way through. But you may have to look at each jack to make sure that the IN wire to the jack is connected as well as the OUT wires (which feed the next jack in the house).
More than you wanted to know, maybe.
BUY a scout. Maybe 2 or three!

I think this camera is actually 5 star worthy, however, the lack of detail in the product description is the reason why I am giving it 4 stars.
I was taking a chance with this camera since no one else had place any reviews for it, but with the price I got it for, I figured I'd try it.
First of all, let me say that this camera is not a wide angle camera as I was assuming. It is zoomed in, I think the ratio is 1:1.6. I actually need a wide angle camera, so this did not suit my needs properly. Although, I suppose I should have known that in the product description when it says "Long range", so it's partially my fault as well.
However, if you do need to be able to see far distances, this camera works really well. The infrared LEDs do a great job of lighting up the scene, even with no additional lights on outside. My back patio is very dark and I was able to see the woods in the distance pretty well.
Also, the screws that come with it confused me a bit. On the bottom of the camera, there are two screw holes, however, this only came with one screw to mount the camera. When I went to mount it, I realized the screw is too long to fit into the camera. The way I found to fix this was not very obvious to me at first. On the rear of the camera, there's a little bracket that will fit a screw as well, which is held in by two hex-screws. The fact that a hex-wrench was included with this camera hinted to me that I had to use it somewhere. With the included hex-wrench, I was able to remove the rear bracket and then use it as a spacer to mount it on the bottom. This is actually a useful feature in case you want to hang your bracket from a ceiling.
Also, this only comes with the camera and the bracket. No power supply or cables. Fortunately, I already had both since I was replacing a Swann camera that already had the wiring and power going to it.
I will probably end up selling this camera as my goal is to be able to see as much in a close distance, but like I mentioned, this is great for longer distances.
EDIT 2011-04-26
Instead of selling this camera, I ended up using it affixed to the side of my house and pointing down the street that leads to my house. This camera does a great job for that, and looks great in both daylight and night time. Most night vision cameras that I've seen like these tend to skew the colors during the day a bit, but this one looks pretty natural. At night, it's very crisp with very little noise at all, especially compared to some other cameras I have.

Lorex 8 Channel Pentaplex Network DVR with CD-RW and 300GB HDD Review

Lorex 8 Channel Pentaplex Network DVR with CD-RW and 300GB HDD
Average Reviews:

The recorder works well all features pretty much as advertised. Motion detection recording is great. The event log or date time range box to find past events took a little getting used to vs. just a vcr screen type scroll back thru old recording date and times. But it makes sense after some use. During playback its odd if you are in 4 camera screen or one camer view and the camere that had recorded activity reaches the end of its recording fo rthat period the view goes back to all 8 cameras, so you have to reselect one or 4 camer view when playback for the desired camera resumes would rather have a blank screen and the time counter continue running or skip to the next recording event for the selected camera.
The remote web viewing is really quirky, IE7 blows up at some point almost everytime I am viewing remotely. On my laptop the remote screen does not always size correctly so the controls on the bottom are cutoff no scroll to get to them, and the "power" button is cutoff so task manager is the only way to end a session. On my local network desktop the screen size is ok and it blows up less often. Configuration should have an option to not require a password to close the remote viewing session, its just annowing to enter a password to quit remote viewing every time.
