It was very inconsistent, sometime it would work, other times it wouldn't - we'd replace the batteries, or even open the battery compartment and it would work. Then the next time you go to use it weeks or months later, it wouldn't work. Most frustrating is that the battery compartment has very small sized screws that fasten it and when you're locked outside, you likely don't have an extra small screwdriver with you. After a year or so of replacing batteries, I bought another identical model, thinking it was just a bad keypad. But no - same problems, same keypad. After having more people get stuck outside and not able to get into the house I am getting a new and DIFFERENT keypad. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had similar issues. The garage door opener itself is fine, this keypad sucks.

(More customer reviews)I paid ~$50 under retail for this on some special deal. I wasn't going to spend retail price on it, as I'm on a budget.
I've tried many other units, as I setup a DVR on the parking lot in front of my apartment. I tried a Leadtek capture card with Linux Zoneminder, but the quality wasn't very good. For camera, I used a Q-See infared 420line outdoor b/w camera, with very bad results. The image quality was horrible. I couldn't make out a person's face on camera at ANY distance. The only perk was the night-vision was decent - maybe good if you're ONLY watching for large objects moving.
Okay on the DCS-3220, I'm very happy with it. The 10/100 is a very good feature of the product. I have it in an outside enclosure recording a parking lot. The night vision is very poor when in low-light, but that can be expected. The C-CS mount is good because I plan on getting a zoom lens for ~50 dollars to zoom into certain things. The management interface and program is very good. It is setup to handle 16 of these cameras without any problems - so scaling up is no problem in the future. When recording, this thing eats up alot of disk space. I gave mine a dedicated 300gig drive to put its recordings on. All-in-all, it offers more than I need, which is exactly what I need.
If I can find a need for another in the future, I'll buy another.

My main issue was that I use Firefox, but the camera will only log in using the Inernet Explorer window. They don't tell you this on the instructions and it still gives you the login panel - but it just says done and won't connect you to the camera.
When you iron out these problems its a great camera a little tricky to focus and the view angle is quite small but it is easy to move to any location and you get a great image.

Smarthome 2420M Wireless INSTEON Motion / Occupancy Sensor Review

(More customer reviews)Wireless range through an exterior wall is only about 20ft, so I had to get multiple access points and install them close to each motion sensor (which may limit your ability to send the signal to a phase that doesn't have a circuit near the motion sensor). The time delay knob is REALLY hard to tell what result you will get (no time markings) so you have to set it, activate with motion, and time it with a stop watch. While I mounted under roof overhang, it would be nice if these actually had rubber gaskets to make them officially outdoor units. It could be smaller to be more "invisible" but it's not bad. The ball joint allows you to fine tune the aim, while also making it stick out more and be more visible. I'm not sure what the battery life will be like under use (9V) but Smarthome says lithium 9V batteries will give you 4x the life in these motion sensors.

ASUS A52F-XE5 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I just ordered this laptop last week to see how well it handles moderate audio and video editing.
At first glance the specs are impressive and this outclasses laptops that are nearly twice the cost. Obviously not a workstation for large commercial projects, but hopefully solid enough build quality to edit and render projects reliably and withstand the abuse from travel assignments.
UPDATE:
I've been using this laptop for a few days now and I'm satisfied, but not thrilled with the purchase.
Pros:
- Great laptop at this price point
- HD editing in Vegas 10 runs flawlessly even with a web browser and audio editor running simultaneously.
- I really like that the hard disk arrived with an OS/programs partition and a storage partition. You still need to designate your file destinations to drive D to keep from cluttering the OS side, but this super helpful for keeping track of large projects.
- I have not yet used the card reader but that's good to have on-board, especially when working with other photographers or videographers who are storing files on SD cards.
- The multi-gesture touchpad is great, two fingers to scroll, three for a left click- i love it. Minor annoyance is the it doesn't respond to gestures well unless your fingers touch from a direct angle which is a little awkward due to the fact that the toucpad is offset about 2 inches to the left.
- It's super quiet. This is fantastic if you're recording nearby. But if you do much recording you know you shouldn't be doing that anyway.
Cons:
- The keyboard sucks horribly. It's the weakest point of construction and in all honesty I expect it to break with regular usage and I'm not at all a heavy handed typer. It is solid near the chassis but springy in the middle around the home keys. As a matter of consistent workflow I use an external keyboard and mouse, but if I didn't the springiness and layout would be a pain.
- The glossy HD monitor looks great, but it's glossy. No surprise there but it will reflect everything everywhere. Not really a bad thing, but something to be aware of.
- Battery life is 2.5 hours of intense usage. This is fine for me because I'm usually docked somewhere, but I wouldn't take this into the jungle or out on the streets.
- The DVD burner is of very cheap construction.
- The ASUS accidental damage warranty is a royal pain in the ass the set-up. I'm pretty sure their website is deliberately non-functional in order to deter people from following up on it. I talked to customer service and they didn't sound surprised and said to try back in a few hours. Lo and behold it still doesn't work. This is worth researching before you buy this laptop because this was one of the prime selling points for me and i still haven't been able to resolve it.
Overall this laptop would not travel well, but it's a cheap highly functional machine that would serve well as an interim laptop until you can purchase something better.

(More customer reviews)This is a good product but it is not "plug and play", it will need some tweaking about placement. I set it up on top of the ground first for about a week. Moving it a little at a time. We have a gravel driveway that is from 16 to 24 feet wide. I placed it 20 feet from the road which is busy. Everything made it go off that went down my side of the road. So I moved it 30ft away. I got everything that turned into the drive except the far side (@ 15 ft away from probe) We started moving the probe away from the transmitter a few feet at a time. The results after a week of playing with it are as follows:
The transmitter is 33 ft from the white line on the road with the probe 12 ft in the middle of the gravel driveway. We put the line connecting the probe and transmitter inside 1 inch pvc pipe and it is buried about 8 to 10 inches deep. Most cars drive over the top of it.
The receiver is in my shop about 6 ft off the ground and is about 50ft from the transmitter. I still get the random false beeps from a passing school bus or BIG truck. I can live with that. It has alerted me to every car pulling in. My old dog still reponds sooner but only when he's awake.
Well worth the money.

D-Link D-Life Internet Surveillance Camera Starter Kit (DHA-390) Review

(More customer reviews)I can't fathom why anybody would actually buy this product. Across the board, everything about it is just plain wrong.
Powerline networking is a relatively good idea, but it looks like the marketing department at D-Link got together one day to see what kind of products they could cram it in to. With this surveillance camera, the implementation is sloppy and unnecessary.
Keep in mind too, that Powerline networking isn't always as straightforward as plugging in a "wall wort" and connecting ethernet to it. If you're using any multi-outlet adapters, or if your home's wiring isn't nearly pristine, the experience can be almost as painful as just running CAT5 cable through your house.
The camera itself is massive compared to any web cam made in the past decade, and assembling it to the base is needlessly complicated for what it is. On the plus side, the base is quite heavy, so it isn't going to be knocked down easily. On the other hand, you absolutely must use wall anchors if you plan to mount the camera on a wall. And given the size of this camera, it's so large and obvious that your baby and pets are the only ones who aren't going to notice it.
Perhaps the most mind boggling issue I have with this kit, is that you can't host it yourself. To see what's on the camera, you have to go to D-Link's site (which is simply not possible if you aren't using Windows and Internet Explorer) and create an account. Once you've done that, you can only see the camera through D-Link's site.
I'm not typically a paranoid person, but that really raised an "Are you serious?" from me. Why the heck would you have a camera in your home broadcasting to D-Link's site? What stops D-Link from peeking in? And perhaps more importantly, what happens if D-Link goes under, or decides that they're just not interested in offering the service anymore? More likely than not, you'll be left with expensive, useless junk.
Don't get me wrong, I can see the value in offering a camera that "just works", but not having the option to host it yourself, and being locked in to Internet Explorer are ridiculous barriers.

(More customer reviews)I'm an IT guy and have tried several IP cam version and by far this is the BEST out there and cheap. It's super clear even at greater resolution. It's MP4 and 1024x768 resolution (XGA). MP4 is near HD quality. It won't be like blueray but hell way better than those early vga ipcam. You get free software to monitor up to 16 IPcam. IP cam means it is a camera that can network to your computer. It can network by wire or by wireless wifi 802.11b or g. The wifi can be wep, wpa-psk, or wpa2-psk. Best of all, it is both day color ip camera and night vision camera. Try to find one for around $100 with great quality at large resolution and networkable, and you won't find 1 anywhere. I'm swapping out all my old cam for these babies. The software has tons of features. I can record sound and use external trigger NC or NO. Man, this rocks by far!!!!! It also has motion detection and blocking. It also has trigger function and scheduling. It can push files out to a NAS (remote network disk). It doesn't have SSL but it does have ip filter so that can do. It is powered by long AC cable - thank god it does not use battery. It kick all other ipcam in the tutu. Love it! Pretty easy to install and tweaking to your liking. Its snapshot can be accessed by any standard program that can open JPG file and even web browser such as IE or Firefox. It uses activeX, thus is is best only with IE browser. Vendor has said they make it workable with other browser later on. But if you want to use it in Firefox, just install the add-on "IE Tab" in firefox and you'll be able to get this work inside it. No biggy. It beats Trendnet, D-Link, Linksys, Axis...IMHO.

POWER DOOR LOCK KIT 4 DOOR Review

(More customer reviews)I installed these in my daughters car prior to installing an alarm. It includes all the hardware to mount and connect to the existing mechanisims that lock and unlock your doors. They look like they could replace worn or defective original equipmetn locks as well. The included wiring is adequate for a mid-size vehicle. The units for the front doors have extra wiring for the switches normaly found in todays cars. The instructions that come with the units seem like an after thought and look like you have to adapt them to fit your car. There is no mention of or suggestion for utilising the four strips of metal that might be mounting brackets. I also had a problem with the ground for the control relay being back-fed through the solenoid. Cutting off the black ground wire to the front door units and leaving the wire to just the relay unit solved the problem. Other wise the solenoids sound strong and capable.

(More customer reviews)After my sister's house was burglarized, I got her three of these fake security cameras and I ordered 2 for myself. They look just like the real ones on the house next door to me. A friend of my sister's asked me if it had a red LED (to look "more real.") I said No and that's why I chose them. I see VERY few red operating lights on home security cameras these days. Besides, you don't want the criminals seeing you up on a ladder replacing the batteries on your fake cameras, do you? I also purchased a sign from a local sign shop reading, "WARNING! Property under video surveillance." The cherry on top of our charade...
The only downside is the small black wire coming out the back. There is nowhere to put the other end. You could tuck it under the base when you install the camera, but I thought that looked pretty amateur, so I just cut the little wire off at the rear of the camera. This is really just a psychological ploy, anyway. If the average burglar sees mounted cameras and warning stickers on your windows, his first, easiest course is to find an easier house to break into. Sure, a determined thief will break in anyway, but this is a great, first line of defense against the more common lower level, crime-of-opportunity type thieves.
If you can't afford a full-on, real video monitoring system, this is a great alternative. I see home security system cameras on MANY homes and you will blend right in with these. It's the cheapest insurance you will ever get!

NETGEAR MCAB1001 MoCA Coax-Ethernet Adapter Kit (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been waiting for the Netgear MoCA Kit for awhile now. There were other solutions, but I had high hopes for this model. As it turns out, it was worth the wait.
First things first, installation was a snap. I followed the instructions and all status lights were on and I was able to use a computer on the other end within minutes. Awesome, but now the TVs were not working. I went into the configuration and turned off All Pass and the problem was fixed. There were also options to adjust frequency, but I did not have to go that far. My setup includes a cable box and DVR and the MoCA works great with them. I'll be adding a small switch to allow for connecting gaming consoles and other devices soon.
I have not tested the transfer speeds extensively, although the Adapters are saying they are at 252 Mbps (out of a max of 270 Mbps). I do have some doubts that the speed is that high, but it's not too far off. Files transferred quickly and I was streaming photos, music, and videos from my home server within minutes to my HDTV in the other room. While I did not test all kinds of video file types, I was able to stream 720p and 1080i without trouble and no lag at all. Of course, if you had other devices pulling bandwidth, then it might be an issue.
You receive 2 coax cables and 2 ethernet cables in the kit. However, it would have been nice to have the cables a bit longer. The configuration pages are fairly straight-forward. Although, it requires you to hook a computer directly up to the devices in order to access the setup options, which isn't a big deal because after you get it going I don't really think you will be doing any additional configuration. The lights on the front of the adapters are a bright blue, but you can turn them off by hitting a button on the back. The units appear to stay relatively cool, but do warm up a bit when you are passing traffic through them heavily. It's nothing abnormal though.
Overall, this setup is highly recommended for those that do not want to run CAT5 through their house. The cost is decent and the setup is very easy. The units provide you with an easy solution for providing network access to your HDTV, gaming console, or other devices.
UPDATE 1/2/2010: It's been almost eight months since buying and installing the Netgear MoCA kit and I am providing this as an update to my review. I have been using them to stream media (video, music, photos) from my home server to my HDTV on another floor. I have also added a small switch and an Xbox 360 along with the HDTV. Streaming has been going very well and all internet access to my Xbox 360 has been great. While there are days I have to reset my other network equipment for various reasons, the NetGear MoCA devices keep on trucking. I never have a problem out of them and they are always performing top notch! Still highly recommended.

Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One office Printer Review

The Canon MX-860 is an all-in-one printer designed for home or small business. The printing is fast, sharp and clear. The auto-document feeder scans both sides of the page, a tremendous time saver when you work with two-sided originals. Couple that with duplex-printing and it's trivial to reproduce two-sided forms and documents. The network connectivity also works well...in the six months I've had the printer, it's operated flawlessly in a mixed Mac/Windows environment on both wireless and wired networks.
Let's look at the MX-860 on a piece-by-piece basis ...
Printing
The Canon MX-860 uses a set of five ink cartridges for printing. Two of the cartridges are black, with the other three being the typical Magenta/Cyan/Yellow set. The printed output is easily sharp enough to be used for business letters; it almost rivals laser printers in quality. To save paper, the printer has built-in duplexing. I haven't measured it, but single-sided printing speed is quite good...I suspect that the 38 pound weight of the printer is due to some good size motors pulling the paper and moving the printhead around. Printing in duplex mode is quite a bit slower. To avoid smearing, the printer waits for the first-side to dry before printing the second side.
Photographs have good tonal gradation and overall appearance, however they don't equal those from a high-end printer that's specifically designed to print photographs. The difference, though, is slight and everybody has liked the prints that I've made. The printer has the usual slots on the front to allow you to insert your camera's memory cards.
Scanning
Whoopee! Duplex scanning! Have you ever tried to scan a stack of two sided pages? And get them merged into one file in the right order? I tried. Once. Then I went out and paid $400 for a dedicated scanner (the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510). With duplex scanning capability on the MX-860, I wouldn't have needed to do that. You put the papers in the feeder, tell the printer that it's a two-sided original and push the button.
Faxing
Outgoing faxing works fine. The faxes seem to get there. Originally, the designers of the fax system missed an extremely important feature...you couldn't specify the number of rings before the fax machine answered. Without that ability, it was almost impossible for the machine to peacefully co-exist with your phone service in a single line household. This problem was fixed by a firmware update and current purchasers can set the number of rings before pick-up. Unfortunately, Canon hasn't posted the new firmware, so owners of older machines are stuck...be careful if you buy one used. +1 brownie point for recognizing and fixing the problem. -2 for not making it available... :>(
Networking and Setup
I had no problems getting both the wireless and wired network up and running. The setup is simple and straight forward. You'll need a USB cable to get the wireless network configured. It may be possible to wirelessly configure the wireless network, but there are certain insanities that even I won't try. You can only use one network - wired or wireless - at once. As I mentioned in the intro, it comes with both Macintosh and Windows software. Getting it to work on my additional networked computers was as simple as inserting the DVD and running the install program.
Ink Consumption
Some printer politely sip ink, but this isn't one of them. It's not quite as bad as beer consumption at a frat party, but in the last 2500 pages, I've gone through six black and two full sets of color cartridges. That works out to slightly over 10.5 cents per page at Amazon's current (11/11/09) prices for OEM ink cartridges...fine for normal use, but not great if you're going to use the printer heavily. Your ink consumption will vary, depending on the mix of photos, graphics and text that you print.
Packaging
You know that ubiquitous orange tape that printer manufactures use to hold everything together? It's there in spades. I wish I owned that franchise. Otherwise, it looks like the printer should ship well. It's well isolated with plenty of molded styrofoam.
In summary, this is my fourth Canon printer and probably the twentieth printer that I've owned. Outside of the faxing issue, it works great. The duplex scanning and printing are valued additions and real time savers...I would have given it a solid five stars if it wasn't for the faxing problem. I haven't used the printer enough to get a sense of long-term reliability; after a couple of thousand sheets of paper, it's been jam free and solid.

(More customer reviews)I am giving 5 stars to the camera alone. If I had to rate the colaterals: Instructions, manuals, customer service, and intentional obstacles ...then It wont deserve more than 3 stars.
When correctly configured and "harmonized" within your network, the camera works very well. I dont know about your expectations but compared with others ccd cameras in the market the balance price/quality is unbeatable.
Since any critic must be 1) constructive to the maker and 2) helpful to other customers, following ...the details and tips:
Problem: Lack of information, Instructions and solutions to specific and commom problems experienced by most of the users.
**** Read Carefully what the other users who rated positively the camera, said about it and how they resolved the problems. Without all these tips I would have wasted hours to findout the solutions. Amazingly those issues are not yet in the Q&A at DLINK support site and neither complement pages for your manuals. Another Marketing Dude with a good monthly check but not a clue about the most fundamental Marketing disciplines.
Resuming:
**** Not only with the camera or Dlink... Any thing hooked to your PC or network must be updated with the most recent firmware. Here...No exceptions, and if you use diferent brands for your router and other net-gears then no option: Update the firmware.
**** If you are behind a router and you want use the DDNS than use the router's feature and not the camera one.
**** If you are using diferent brand for your router... WATCH OUT:
a) Transmission rate of the camera must be 11 Mbs. DLINK's ambitions must have let them think that most of the routers in the market are their own, so the 22 Mbs for the 802.11 b standard has been assumed.
b) If your using Linksys G router then adjust the basic rate (wireless advanced setup) to 1-2 Mps This will make it more compatible with all sort of exotic 11B devices.
c) Assign to the camera a static IP so you will be able to forward through the router, the necessary ports for Audio+Video
**** Customer Service:.... Have a translator from India before calling ( My english teatcher and friend Kamal is from India...so no hard feelings here ), and be sure that you are a beginer because if you are an advanced user you ll have to be patient and wait untill the dude finishes his script and then find out that you know more than him and it it is only then when you deserve a real tech. assistant. The dude will give you a code, forward your call and then when "the expert" takes the phone the call is lost. bip bip bip bip.....nnnnoooooooooo all this time wasted and I only got an "Indie-Tech" Language Class.
