Cisco-Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX Review

Cisco-Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX

I live in a two story house, with plenty of walls in between. This unit replaced 3 11a Access Points. I can now get 108mbps anywhere in my house with almost 100% signal strenght (my laptop is using the WPC54GX card).
The web interface is very straightforward and looks professional. I would buy it again.

Now you can enjoy wireless home-network access in those hard-to-reach rooms and--simultaneously--get faster networking and Internet performance, too. The WRT54GX Wireless-G broadband router from Linksys uses the company's advanced SRX (Speed and Range eXpansion) technology to enhance the speed and the reach of a Wireless-G (802.11g) network. The WRT54GX can provide faster wireless network throughput, reduce dead spots, and increase wireless range over standard Wireless-G networks. The handy WRT54GX serves as an Internet-sharing router, a four-port 10/100 switch, and an SRX-enhanced Wireless-G access point all at once. Relative to standard 80 2.11g technology, a network using all SRX products can extend network reach up to three times as far and boost wireless network speed by up to eight times. (Actual throughput, speed, and range depend on a host of factors, from building materials to network traffic and distance from the router.) The device is Wi-Fi-certified and backward compatible with 802.11b (Wireless-B), 802.11g (Wireless-G) and, of course, other Linksys SRX products. Mixed wireless environments such as networks containing SRX, Wireless-B, and Wireless-G products can operate each client at its own maximum data rate. SRX products maintain their higher speed and range, providing the throughput and quality of service to deliver applications such as VoIP (Internet telephony) and video streaming. SRX is based on MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) technology, a key component in the upcoming Wireless-N (802.11n) standard. To improve range and speed, MIMO uses two radios and three antennas on a wireless router or client adapter. To enhance data protection and privacy, the router can encode all wireless trans missions with WPA (Wireless Protection Access). Its powerful Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall enhances protection to all the wired and wireless PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks while also supporting VPN passthrough. Configuration is easy using a Web-browser-based configuration utility. What's in the Box Wireless-G broadband router, a setup CD-ROM with Symantec Internet Security, a u ser's guide on CD-ROM, an AC power adapter, an Ethernet network cable, a quick-i nstallation guide, and a registration card.

Techko Glass Break Sensor Alarm (S086N) (Telko S086) Review

When we tested the sound of the glass break, the sound only lasted for 10-15 seconds. The first 5 seconds were pretty loud, then the sound faded away. If you are in another room with the door closed, you are not going to hear the alarm. Also, the product sticks to the window.
Early one morning about 2 am, apparently the glue decided to stop working, so the device fell and the alarm (5 seconds) loud woke me up. I only had the product for 1 week. Eventually all 3 of the devices fell of my windows.

Lorex Wireless Easy Connect Pan / Tilt Network IP Remote Surveillance Camera Review

Lorex Wireless Easy Connect Pan / Tilt Network IP Remote Surveillance Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This granny couldn't. Perhaps yours is more tech savvy.
The product description for the Lorex Wireless Easy Connect Pan/Tilt Network IP Remote Surveillance Camera reads: "Lorex's new Pan Tilt Wireless Easy Connect Network Camera allows users to remotely monitor their business or home through a secure, password protected connection that requires no networking knowledge." I must take issue with the 'easy' in the name of the product and the 'no networking knowledge.'
Once I found and paid someone who does this kind of thing for a living, I discovered that the camera system itself is quite good. The images are clear and illumination a welcome bonus. But there is no way I could have installed it myself.
However, even my professional installer found the Lorex directions to be useless.
So if you're looking for an easy-to-install system, look elsewhere. But if you're willing to pay for help installing a rather pricey system, then you might want to give it a go. And keep in mind that it's wireless - you need a router.
Note to Lorex: You have a fine product with shoddy installation instructions, and you need to be clearer about system/set up requirements. That should be an easy enough problem for a good tech writer to solve.

Samsung N150 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue) Review

Samsung N150 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the Samsung N150 after much research and have not been disappointed. The main reasons for my choice were: 1. Matte screen, which I prefer over the glossy screens of other netbooks I've seen in stores, 2. Battery life, 3. Matte blue finish of cover doesn't show fingerprints, 4. Positive reviews of keyboard, 5. Super-quiet fan. And so far, all of these features have lived up to my hopes. Other nice features: silky smooth operation of lid hinges, and the built-in webcam and microphone.
One downside as noted by a previous reviewer: the initial setup of the hard drive and software takes a LONG time (one hour, more or less). From what I've read, there are other netbooks out there with much shorter setup times. Fortunately, you only have to go through setup once with this netbook. Be patient, and you'll get through it fine. Just don't expect to be doing useful work until the day after your box comes in the mail.
Another negative is that the processor seems relatively slow (compared to desktop PCs or full-size laptops) at some operations like booting, doing data transfer, and unpacking/installing software. This is just because of the processor, which has been optimized for low power usage. And I imagine that other netbooks have the same shortcoming, so it's no particular knock against the N150. It's the price all netbooks pay for being small and power-stingy.
Having said that, once the Samsung gets itself booted and ready to go, it does fine at web browsing, email, word processing, and video watching. I was able to watch a streaming Netflix video with no problems. Speakers are decent, but a battery-powered iPod speaker like an Altec Lansing iM237 plugged into the headphone jack gives a much better and louder sound.
Suggestions:
1. Allow at least one hour for initial setup. Be patient.
2. Either turn off the automatic "Windows Update" in the control panel, or change the frequency of updates from "every day" to "one day per week." The automatic update hogs the processor each time it runs, and you'll be wondering why the netbook is running so slowly every morning.
3. In the Start menu, type "Task Manager" in the search box and put a shortcut for the Task Manager in your Start menu or on your taskbar. Get familiar with the Task Manager because it shows you CPU usage, memory usage, and what processes are running in the background. When the blue "hard disk" light starts flashing and the netbook slows down, the Task Manager will tell you why.
4. In the Start menu, type "gadgets" in the search box, and install the "CPU" gadget on your desktop. The large dial gives a constant readout of CPU usage, and the small dial a readout of RAM usage. Another good tool for monitoring the CPU workload. When the needle is pegged in the red zone (e.g. at startup) you're not going to get much done. Wait til the needle drops out of the red zone before trying to do any other CPU-intensive tasks.
5. Forget the installed McAfee antivirus program and download the free "Microsoft Security Essentials". It's free and it works great. Saved my other laptop from numerous attacks. Also download the free "Malwarebytes" program.
6. Forget the MS Office "trial" software and download the free Open Office, which works just like MS Office and can open MS Office files, and an save in MS Office format. (Open Office also plays better with this netbook than the included MS Works package. I downloaded Open Office and then uninstalled both MS Office and MS Works.)
Some owners have reported that replacing the 1GB RAM stick with 2 GB RAM improves performance. Before going that route, I tried the Windows ReadyBoost feature, which Microsoft says will improve performance in some operations. Exactly which operations is not clear, and when I tried using ReadyBoost with a 4GB USB emory stick, I wasn't able to discern any difference.
All in all, the Samsung is a competent netbook in a nice package. Two thumbs up.
Update: After upgrading to 2 GB RAM and having used this netbook for a couple of weeks, I like it even better. Upgrading the RAM definitely helped performance. And the matte screen is definitely better than the glossies, and the keyboard is much better than my friend's Asus eeePC keyboard. The trackpad is just too small for more than occasional emergency use, though, so I use an iHome mid-size wireless optical mouse, which I love and highly recommend. Being freed from the tiny trackpad and the marginal 1 GB RAM makes this little machine a pleasure to use.
PS--If you do install Microsoft Security Essentials, be sure to follow their instructions for uninstalling other antivirus programs first (in this case, McAfee). I apparently failed to do so, and eventually noticed an oscillation in CPU usage as shown by the Task Manager when the CPU should have been idle. A Google search suggested a conflict between two competing antivirus programs. I went back and uninstalled McAfee by using the "appwiz.cpl" command per instructions on the Microsoft Security Essentials site, and problem solved.

2Wire HomePortal 1000HW DSL Modem and Network Router Review

2Wire HomePortal 1000HW DSL Modem and Network Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 1000H Homeportal has been a solid performer and was extremely easy to install. I have been using it for three years and have had no problems. However, I don't recommend this device unless you are looking for the cheapest, most reliable solution to sharing an Internet connection, files and printer between computers. The 2Wire 2700HG-B DSL Modem Router Wireless Access Point currently sells for about the same price and is a much better product.
The 1000HW acts as the network Access Point for up to four PCs, which can then simultaneously share a single internet connection, printers, and files between any of the computers. The Homeportal has only one ethernet and one USB 1.1 connection, meaning that the connection of more than one PC to the unit will require Wireless networking or a seperate device that allows multiple ethernet cable connections. The Homeportal is limited to Wireless 802.11B connections. This means slower connection than 802.11G when networking wirelessly, and definitely not a good thing for those looking to stream music or video files or any video rich Internet content. Given that, I highly recommend getting the 2Wire 2700HG-B DSL Modem Router Wireless Access Point. The 2700HG-B is 802.11G and allows four ethernet connections.
The 1000HW has a built-in firewall that will provide all the security most users need when coupled with Anti-virus software, and requires no configuring by the user. For those who want to create more access to their network, the 2Wire software allows more advanced users that flexibility also. It is capable of WEP and WPA encryption modes.
Pros:
- cheap
- easy to install
- very reliable
Cons:
- only one Ethernet connection
- USB 1.1 not the faster 2.0
- 802.11b is too slow for those whose primary interest is streaming digital entertainment (music, videos, photos), need 802.11G, and probably 802.11N if wanting to stream Hi-Definition content
- Can probably get a 802.11g product from 2Wire or other manufacturer for about the same price and will need the extra speed to meet the future demands of Media rich content used at home or in the office.

Levana CT1000 Digital Wireless Child Tracker Wrist Watch and Kid Finder/Locator Review

Levana CT1000 Digital Wireless Child Tracker Wrist Watch and Kid Finder/Locator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I'm a bit of a gadget geek and work in the IT industry, so I think I'm a pretty good judge of quality when it comes to electronics.
We recently moved into what most would call a great neighborhood. One downside to our new house is that it doesn't have a fenced back yard for our kids to play in. One day our 2 1/2 yr. old son managed to get out of the house and wandered down to the street corner one house down - he likes to go for walks. Jinny thought he was out helping me in the garage. I thought he was inside. Some 'nice' neighbors brought him back (thanks!) then proceeded to call the cops and report us for child neglect (Thanks for nothing!!!) Whatever happened to watching out for neighbors???? They obviously don't have small kids. The police were very understanding and assured us they were only following up on the call and not going to arrest us. Kudos to the police for doing a great job.
So, now my wife is terrified to let the kids out of her sight. We bought this device as a backup, not the primary way to keep track of the kids, until we can get a fence installed.
After convincing him it was a nice watch to wear, we proceeded to test it.
Inside the house it picked up the signal and indicated direction like it's advertised. When we went outside, as soon as our son walked more than 15 feet away, the receiver couldn't pick up the signal, and that was with clear unobstructed site. The device claims you can set an out of range warning signal for up to 98 ft. It doesn't even work for the shortest range setting.
If you decide to take your chances, there are also a couple of other minor issues to consider. The wrist band is too easy for kids to take off. Our son had it off in less than a minute the first time we put it on him. Second, this is more an annoyance, there's no way to disable the 'panic button' on the watch.
Don't waste your money! It's a great idea, but the device doesn't work! Hope this saves someone else some time and money.
Regards - Ken

First, let me compliment Panasonic on its customer support. It may take a few minutes to get through, but they do know what they are doing. I needed them twice during setup and they came through both times.
Pros: This is a decent camera at a great price; decent low light performance; relatively easy setup; free web access hosted by Panasonic; compatible with any cell phone with a web browser (pics only); motion sensor; reliable.
Cons: slow shutter speed (anything moving is blurry) and really does not do 30 FPS as advertised.
Overall - recommended as a reasonable cost home monitoring system.

Getting my ZWave system to recognize the door sensor was a little difficult. My first unit I sent back because it did not add to my system. The second unit displayed the same symptoms but in desperation, I repetitively pressed the bind button and... guess what? It did!
I had to custom fit the unit into my existing door molding but NOW.... It works and looks ok. Not as easy as first thought, but what is?
I intend to buy more now knowing the secrets I passed on to you.

The Hawking Technologies HomeRemote Pro Wireless Door/Window Sensor lets you expand and customize your HomeRemote Pro Monitor and Control System to allow you to monitor any door or window in your home. This sensor can assign lights to turn on or off when a door or window is opened. It can even send you a text message or email alert when activity occurs. This easy-to-use plug-and-play sensor helps you keep track of your home when you are away, providing you and your family with security and peace of mind.
Monitor doors and windows from anywhere using the convenient pro service cell phone interface. Note: This product includes only a HomeRemote Door/Window Sensor. An installed HomeRemote Pro Internet Gateway (sold separately) is required to use the sensor. An additional monthly subscription fee is required to access all of the features of the sensor. (Click here for a comparison chart between the Home Remote Pro System basic and pro-level services.) Some features of the sensor may also require additional HomeRemote modules.
Additional Sensors Mean Added Security The HomeRemote Door/Window Sensor lets you monitor doors and windows in your house through the HomeRemote Web interface or via your cell phone. You can use the sensor to monitor any door or window in your home, including garage doors and refrigerators.
With it you can set certain lights to turn on and off when doors or windows are opened, frightening and exposing potential intruders. You can also program it to send you a text message and email alert when it detects activity at your house.
The sensor's long battery life (3 AAA batteries are included) helps ensure your home stays protected while letting you place it anywhere without blocking an outlet or worrying about a power cord. The Pro Door/Window Sensor works with an installed HomeRemote Pro Gateway (HRPG1), HomeRemote Gateway (HRGZ1), or any Z-Wave enabled controller with door/window support.
Quick, Easy Setup With true plug-and-play setup, the Pro Door/Window Sensor is easy to integrate into your existing HomeRemote Pro System. Simply follow the wizard on the add/remove module page of the HomeRemote Web interface to add a new sensor to your customized system. Then it's just a matter of installing the sensor onto any door or window in your house (installation hardware is included) and testing the connection. No power cords, no special wiring. It's that easy.
How the HomeRemote Pro Monitoring System Works The HomeRemote Monitoring System lets you monitor your home, secure it from intruders, and control its appliances and power usage via a cell phone or an Internet browser while you're working, at school, or even traveling abroad. You can also use it to monitor your children or pets, or keep tabs on an elderly family member. And business owners can use the system to keep an eye on their premises or employees.
By connecting the Pro Internet Gateway to your Internet router, you'll effectively create a wireless network that "connects" your home to the Internet. And by adding HomeRemote Pro accessories to your home, such as the Pro Door Sensor and Pro Lamp Module, or otherHomeRemote Pro-enabled products, such as Electrical Appliance modules and Pro Motion Detectors (sold separately), you'll have the option of remotely controlling your heating and cooling system, lighting, blinds, garage door, and virtually any electrical appliance in your home.
Award-Winning Z-Wave Wireless Technology At the heart of the HomeRemote Pro System is Z-Wave wireless "mesh" technology, an award-winning wireless standard for home automation. Unlike traditional remote technologies that rely on infrared signals, Z-Wave is not affected by walls or other barriers, and it offers two-way communication, giving you confirmation that your commands were received and executed. With Z-Wave, the guesswork and finger-crossing is taken out of the equation.
Because each "module" or HomeRemote Pro accessory acts as a repeater that extends the distance of the Z-Wave signals, with a few easily installed and strategically placed HomeRemote Pro accessories, your entire home can be covered in a matter of minutes without any hard-wiring or special installation.
Easy Set Up: No Special Tools or Wiring Required Setting up a HomeRemote Pro Monitoring System up couldn't be easier. Once you connect the Pro Internet Gateway to your router, you log into the HomeRemote Pro Web site, where you can customize your HomeRemote Pro System by naming the rooms in your home. (You can also personalizeyour HomeRemote Pro Web page with photos of yourself and other custom touches.) Then it's just a matter of plugging accessories into outlets throughout your home and adding them to your system.
The "installation" of HomeRemote Pro accessories is as easy as plugging in one of the several HomeRemote Pro modules into available electrical outlets. Once the modules, which are about the size of typical home appliance timers, are connected, you simply plug your lamp or appliance into it. The modules let you control appliances remotely (you can schedule them, or turn them on or off on demand), and they will also act as "repeaters" that effectively extend your home's Z-Wave wireless network. For more information on HomeRemote-compatible accessories, visit www.homeremote.net.
The HomeRemote Door and Window sensor measures 4.75 x 1.2 x 0.75 inches.

Ok, when I first got this everything pretty much was straight forward. Install the software, plug in the stuff, and a few other simple things. One thing I wish I would've known was my computer can't be signed on to messenger if I want to use it on the phone. One thing I really liked about the phone was the keypad, it was very simple and the buttons were comfortable, but still something to get used to. One other great thing is the talk option of when you're on AIM. Other than the part where the computer has to be signed off in order for it to work on the phone, this is all in all a great product.

4UCAM Handheld 2.5" Video Color Baby Monitor 2.4GHz Wireless Camera Daisy-(Day & Night) (Video & Audio) Infant Nursery Monitor Review

4UCAM Handheld 2.5 Video Color Baby Monitor 2.4GHz Wireless Camera Daisy-(Day and Night) (Video and Audio) Infant Nursery Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a little nervous when I ordered this monitor because there were no reviews on it. I read reviews on all the other video monitors available and almost decided on another brand, but I really really wanted to get the "dancing daisy", I thought it looked so cute!! I'm still a little dissapointed because I wanted to get the yellow/orange model but because it didn't go with my nursery I had to go with the pink one. And I have to say, I don't regret my purchase at all.
The camera looks soooo cute I will buy another one if/when I have another baby (you can use up to 4 with just one receiver). It's not only that it looks cute, it works great too. I had a little trouble at the beginning finding a right place for it, I didn't want to place it on the changing table because I could only see my baby through the rails, so I "clipped" it to the side of the crib and now I get a clear picture from above. The picture is actually better than I had expected (black and white at night, but very clear), and the sound is great too. I did have a little interference with the video at first but moving the receiver around solved the problem. My bedroom and the nursery are really close, wall to wall, I do not know if this has anything to do with it or if it actually helps in getting a clear image.
Also, I had to set the volume to the lowest setting I could because there was a little static but it goes away by lowering the volume. I had this problem with my sound only model too, again, do not know if it's because of the short distance between monitor and receiver.
The only thing I don't like is that the video monitor is really bright, and I'm a light sleeper, a little noise or light wakes me up, so what I do is I wait until the baby falls sleep, turn off the monitor and leave my sound only monitor on. If she wakes up during the night I just turn on the monitor and see if she's just fuzzing or if I need to go and get her. One night I forgot to turn on the sound monitor in the nursery so I had to leave the video monitor on all night, I just placed a dark paper on top of the screen and that way the light didn't bother me.
I should also mention, the camera itself does not have an on/off button, so you either leave it on all the time or just unplug it when not in use (which is what I do), it would be nice to just turn it off but unplugging it is not such a big deal.
All in all a great monitor, it looks and works great. I'm really happy with my purchase and would recommend it to my friends. Actually if you recommend it to someone the seller will give you and your friend a $5 cash back. I would list my email to take advantage of this, but I don't believe amazon would let me do it, ha!. Oh well. I hope this review helps someone, this camera is so cute I don't understand how there are not more reviews on it.
I will try and take pictures one of these days, maybe I'll be able to get a few good ones to upload here.

Sony TAM100 Gray Answering Machine Review

Sony TAM100 Gray Answering Machine
Average Reviews:

Just bought this machine as a companion to the Sony cordless phone model SPP-ID975, and am astounded at the poor quality of the chip generated voice system. Attempting to understand the instructions of the chip generated voice, or the information it tries to relay concerning general operation, is futile. About 80% of the sound comes out sounding like gibberish. Recorded messages are quite a bit clearer, but nothing compared to the old tape recording systems. And from what I can determine, you must manually delete all your own old messages. According to the instructions, the machine doesn't do this automatically. I tried it, and after two or three tries, finally got the machine to delete all the messages in a mail box. Also, the instructions state that if there is a power loss, the recorder looses it's time and date info. I'm returning the machine. There has to be something on the market better than this.

Sony's TAM-100 digital answering machine does a whole lot more than just take up to 15 minutes of messages. It never takes a lunch break or reads magazines at the front desk. But it does let you set up three separate message boxes, so your co-workers or family can have direct access to their own voice messages. It's all digital - on both the incoming and outgoing sides - for ultimate reliability. With flash memory so it never forgets messages, even if the power goes out. The TAM-100 also lets you screen calls, speed up or slow down message playback and selectively delete messages so you don't have to listen to all of them every time you play back. It also includes a remote control card.

This battery is not very east to find if you were to buy from a brick and mortar store. Amazon made it easy. The item arrived quickly and in perfect shape. It has given no problem since installing.

D-Link DI-624 Wireless Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch, 802.11g, 108Mbps Review

This is my third wireless system. The last either had bad reception problems, bad connection problems or just stopped working. They both were SMC systems. They both were small nightmares to get up and running, and of course customer support sucked. I got rid of my last wireless system which was 802.11a which I bought because I thought it was much better. I am not a computer wiz I'll admit that but this technology should be easy for people like me to set up and use. I am who they sell this stuff to.
I read reviews and decided to get this system with the D-link DWL-G650. I held my breath when I started setting it up. I was waiting for the minute when I would realize that I would need to call customer support. That didn't happen. This system did almost set itself up. I have a 2.4GHz phone and it doesn't seem to effect the range. I live in a brick house and I just went outside in my driveway, on the other side of house from where my wireless router is set up and I was getting almost 100% full signal strength. The online interface is very easy to use and the instructions are easy to follow. I did upgrade the firmware before I set up any of the hardware and the 108Mbps system is up and running. I can't say if this system will work tomorrow, but today I am very suprised at how it works.

SD7504 5.8GHZ Digital Sytem Wireless Camera for SD7500 Review

SD7504 5.8GHZ Digital Sytem Wireless Camera for SD7500
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the SD7500 phone system so I could use this camera to monitor our baby and add the bluetooth dock to use for my cell phone calls when at home. For those two conveniences alone, I love the system.
The SD7504 camera is really easy to setup and use with the 7502 phones (I still don't know why Motorola doesn't sell a base unit with the 7502 standard!). The image quality is pretty mediocre, but is about what you would expect for such a small screen. The low-light feature works great, and the unit doubles as a great audio intercom for the room. The interface was smartly designed so that no sound is made in the room when you check the camera from a remote phone, but with a simple button press you can talk clearly through the 7504. You can definitely have some fun confusing your baby by talking to him through the 7504 while being in another room.
Summary:
Pros - Great interface, excellent quality two-way audio, easy to mount and easy to detach in "wireless" mode when you need 3-4 hours of monitoring of another area without a power cord attached.
Cons - Mediocre image quality, range is not as long as phones are. Mine didn't work with my base station on the other side of my 2000 sq. foot house, but works great when I moved the base station closer to the center of the home.
I'd recommend the product even with the small downsides.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway (WCG200) Review

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway (WCG200)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The WCG200 V2 still has several software/firmware defects, the most annoying of which is dropped connections several times a day. To restore communications, a cold boot is required.
The convenience of an all-in-one solution is outweighed by the time wasted in reestablishing connections. If you telecommute using SSH or Telnet over VPN then DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.
