I burried the probe in the middle of the drive and parallel. It really has about 10 feet on each side which is good enough.
The only false alarms I've gotten are during bad lightening storms. I guess the EFI from the close lightening is the factor. No worries though. Durring these kinds of storms, nobody is driving down my driveway or coming to sneak up on me.
I have the transmitter mounted on a tree about 230 feet away from the reciever. It is very dependable. I was worried about battery life, but not anymore.
I added a 12 volt set of LEDs to the receiver in the house. I bought the blue LEDs at one of those Auto Zone places. Since zone 1 stays on for 20 minutes and outputs 12 volts, I can tell if the system is working. As I come home and drive over the sensor, I trigger the light and it stays on for 20 minutes. If I was in the shower and I could not hear the audio alert I would see the LEDs and that would let me know if some one had passed over the sensor while I was out of range of the audio alert.
The audio alert only lasts for a few seconds.
I have become extremely dependent on this device. I used to get up all the time, looking out the windows because I thought I heard a car or motorbike. Now I don't have to worry.
To test this device, I typically use a golf club. Let's say a 9 Iron (ha ha). I just wave the head of the club near the sensor and then look down my drive way through the window to see if the LEDs that I installed light up. It's easier than opening the window and straining to hear the audio alert.
Testing is very important. I need to always know that this thing is working. When I come home every day the LEDs are lit up when I walk in the house.
I did have a recent time where the transmitter stopped working. I opened the transmitter, moved several of the DIP switches back and forth and presto, the system was dependable again.
