Note: I've also tried the Panasonic KX-TH1212 so will inject some comparison notes where differences stand out.
I like the phone's ergonomics. Good size, well positioned buttons, menus that make sense (unlike Panasonic's). Looks very nice without being overdone. Voice quality and range is very good, although, I thought Panasonic had a slight edge here. On the other hand, unlike the Panasonic, this VTech shows you the caller id sometime today.
Here is why it went back to the store:
- No headset plug. This kills it for me as I need to join conference calls when working from home. Speakerphone is not good enough. Actually, the speakerphone is another weak point. It seems to fade once in awhile. Panasonic's speakerphone didn't have this problem but I haven't used either for too long.
- Can not dial back a missed call. I mean, you technically can, but the Vtech insists on defaulting the number to 7 digits without the 1 in front. My phone provider requires the +1 to dial out. You have to press the `number format' button every time you want it to return a missed call so that it chooses the format you need. No, you can not program it to remember your preferred setting.
- No belt clip. My 7 year-old Vtech (the one I am unsuccessfully have been trying to replace) and the Panasonic have it. My wife can't live without it (and also the headset).
- Custom batteries. This is be biggest issue with my old Vtech. The battery replacement (which I am likely to need in a year or two) costs as much as a new phone. Panasonic uses rechargeable AAAs which makes a lot more sense.
