Q-see 4CH Dvr with Motion Detection & USB 2.0 Port Review

Q-see 4CH Dvr with Motion Detection and USB 2.0 Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these along with my neighbor from another site about a year ago. The motion detection is absolutely useless, so if you really want that feature buy another DVR. The remote control isn't intuitive at all so it makes it a little annoying to navigate the menus. If you have less than 4 cameras, you can disable the unused video inputs but when you set it to auto cycle through all the cameras, it still shows the blank blue screen for those inputs. Since this is an entry level CCTV DVR, it doesn't multitask, which means you have to stop recording to playback recordings. Other than those complaints the DVR works fairly well. Once in a while when the power goes out, when the DVR starts up it prompts to recover the HD where it left off, I'm not real sure what that means but it will stay at that prompt forever until you answer the question, which means if it happens while you're on vacation there goes your security system until you get back to say YES. This sounds like a negative review but for the price this isn't too bad of a choice. If you can find a DVR with functional motion detection for around this price, I'd get that one instead.

Q-See QSOCWC Weatherproof CMOS Camera w/Night Vision (Color) Review

Q-See QSOCWC Weatherproof CMOS Camera w/Night Vision (Color)
Average Reviews:

I purchased 3 of these cameras to go with a Q-See 4-channel PCI card. I set up all three on my office desk, under good lighting. One camera has a decent image, one camera has a poor image, and the image from the third camera is so washed out that it is practically useless. The night vision feature allows you to make out shapes from very close range, but not much else. Even on the "decent" camera, the color is poor. Prior to this purchase, I was looking at some demo systems at Sam's club, and the image quality with these cameras is much, much worse than even the entry-level, bargain cameras that were being demonstrated. I would recommend that you keep looking for a better camera, as this one has a poor picture quality.

VideoSecu Outdoor Day Night Infrared Security Camera 540TVL 1/3" SONY CCD 3.5-8mm Zoom Focus Lens 48 IR Leds with Power Supply and Camera Cable 1T6 Review

VideoSecu Outdoor Day Night Infrared Security Camera 540TVL 1/3 SONY CCD 3.5-8mm Zoom Focus Lens 48 IR Leds with Power Supply and Camera Cable 1T6

The camera was purchased because of the high resolution, zoom lens and night vision features and it was a good decision. I needed a camera to cover my driveway and steps leading to my home. The zoom feature allowed me to tailor the coverage area to exactly what was required. There are two adjustments a zoom and a focus that you have to work together to get a perfect image. This camera allows you to put a text ID in the image and select its location on the image. You can also set the shutter speed, brightness, back light compensation, AGC, white balance, mirror image, day or night mode, motion area, privacy areas of the screen can be blacked out, contrast, sharpness and color gain. The controls are on the back of the camera to set it up so depending where you install the camera you may have to set it up before it is in its final location. I use the default settings and they work just fine. It comes with a 2 amp power supply and the specs do not state how much current it draws in the night mode with the IR on. I feed the power to the camera with 18 gauge solid copper wire to limit the voltage drop which would dim the IR lights if a smaller power cable were used. Color images are good and what I expected. The IR images are good but not as good as the color. I do not use the motion detection feature of the camera but use the one in the Mini DVR VideoSecu Mini Security CCTV DVR Recorder Motion Detection Overwrite Schedule Videos with Audio Recording 3UAwhich it works great with.
Issues: The only issue I had was very minor. The template provided to drill the mounting holes for the camera mount was wrong. Two of the holes were out of location. So check it before you use it. It is a pain if you are drilling in thick steel and they don't line up, ask me how I know.

Lorex CVC6985U Professional Indoor/Outdoor Security Camera (Black) Review

Lorex CVC6985U Professional Indoor/Outdoor Security Camera (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a different model lorex 150 foot night vision camera and was amazed at the quality. That camera has beat 60mph winds, snow, and rain without a problem while still producing a clear picture since day one. For that reason I purchased the model LOREX CVC6985U and had nothing but good thoughts on my way outside to install this thing.
Thinking ahead I decided to test the camera out before climbing +15 feet in the air and mounting it. That's when the feel good story came to an end. This camera while producing a very nice picture does not recognize black and grey clothing, so it displays those colors as green. I could not believe it so I changed to another black shirt and it once again showed green. I then panned to a black garbage container and it was black, then I panned to a black grill set and it was black. However, I panned back to my black shirt and it showed green. I then went inside and randomly recorded black images around the house all of which looked fine, however, the conclusion was that once my black clothing was recorded they were green which puzzles me. I then unplugged the cable off a surveillance monitor and ran the cable to a hd tv and same deal. Green Green Green shirts and pants. I can only imagine someone installing this camera and not testing it out and end up giving the police the description of a burglar with a green shirt, green hat, and green pants. Maybe I just have a defective model. If that is the case, This review will change to reflect that once a replacement unit is had. Until then ***TEST*** this camera before you climb up the ladder.**Update**
Replacement unit was received and the same problem mentioned above occurs. It was told to me that this model Lorex CVC6985U, was not produced with what's called an IR-Cut off filter mechanism. That means the colors will not be accurate and true to life. I wish they would state that on the box as I have and have seen plenty of other Lorex cameras and none of them have this issue. This camera is marketed as Day/night just like the rest and on the box it shows a garden, people in a store, and other outside activities. Nothing however, expresses the fact that black, grey, and other dark colors will display as loud green because the company decided to not include a filter on the lens' of the camera. I have $20 cameras that have this filter. If your a professional and know how to install this filter on the lens(You might void the warranty) this might be a good camera. However, if your one of the many D-I-Y'ers keep looking and if your buying a Lorex make sure the camera has a filter installed stock from the factory.

SVAT CV31 Hi-Res Outdoor CCD Security Camera w/Long Range Night Vision Review

SVAT CV31 Hi-Res Outdoor CCD Security Camera w/Long Range Night Vision
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been experimenting with a few low-end security cameras. This camera is in the mid-price range of the cameras I have tried. It also delivers mid-range results. You get what you pay for I guess. The only reason I give this camera 4 stars is that it seems like a bargain for $75. I'm sure it is not a great camera compared to some of the pricier models. I have compared it side by side to the Q-See QSC48030 and I was not very impressed with SVAT when compared to the Q-See. On the other hand, the SVAT is much better than the X-10 camera line, especially in dim light or at night. The SVAT is a bit oversized, which may be good if you are mainly trying to create a deterrent. But the camera feels a bit flimsy and hollow to me. One of the power units I received was defective and that might have rendered the camera useless had I not been able to replace the power unit. The SVAT does have a few infrared LEDs for night-vision, but the illumination is quite dim, and you probably won't get enough illumination for security purposes beyond about 10 or 15 feet. The camera is much sharper than X-10 cameras, but not as sharp as a Q-See camera. The sharpness issue is most apparent in dim lighting and at night. The camera is surprisingly bright in very dim lighting situations, like right before dark, and at first light. This camera has a minor problem with color imaging -- I have noticed a pinkish cast to images at certain times of the day. If money is tight, or you are using this camera in a not-too-critical situation, the SVAT might be a good choice. But if you can afford it, I recommend splurging on the Q-See model mentioned above. Right now, I think the price difference is only about $40.

Q-See QSC48030 High Resolution Weatherproof CCD Camera w/80ft of Night Vision (Color) Review

Q-See QSC48030 High Resolution Weatherproof CCD Camera w/80ft of Night Vision (Color)
Average Reviews:

Update 1-20-2011 This camera is still running strong - the only periodic maintenance is cleaning the lens on the front monthly. For the entry level camera it mounted easily and has performed for years with just simple windex used to clean the glass front lens. While the K540 and K550 have better picture quality and better night vision, this works quite well for my 50' front yard. I did finally spray the area around the camera with raid before cleaning the lens and that helped with the spider web issue - all of my IR cameras have a disproportionally large amount of spiders!
Update 12-20-2008: This camera has been running flawlessly except for mother nature. It seems that spiders like the infrared light at night (I'm not an insect person but I know some insects can see IR light). As a result they tend to make webs over the lit area at night. The spider being so close to the camera looks like you are being robbed by king kong to your DVR and thus makes all night tapes of spider web weaving which are fun to watch in 16X speed but the reality is you must clean the lens once a month to maintain good night vision. Daytime it is not a problem.
Update 5-15-2008: This particular camera has been running for about 2 months now and faces the street where we have had a drug problem. Last night it caught the evicted drug dealer breaking into his old house to retreive forgotten property when the police escorted him out the first time. Since our neighborhood watch had been warned that the home should be vacant I noticed the movement across the street, called 911, and 2 minutes later the former problem was cuffed and stuffed into the squadcar for criminal trespass, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, violation of a restraining order, violation of an eviction order, and breaking and entering. We'll see him again in 5-10 years. Does the camera work at 100 feet in pitch black conditions? Yes. But a human pair of eyes was needed to resolve a man at night. The sony can see it w/o the help.

----------------original review below----------------I bought both the bottom of the Q-see day/night camera line (this camera) and their mid-range unit (the 540 line resolution, 65 foot range for the night IR leds model Q-See QSB520SR Weatherproof Color High-Res Day/Night Camera Kit (540TVL) with 65-Feet Night Vision) I have them both hooked to a Q-see DVR recorder and there is a difference when I compare their pictures side by side on my DVR display. I hope these notes help people pick which one is best for their intended use.
This model is selling for $130 while the next step up listed above is $230 right now, however the prices vary almost daily
Pros ($130)
Cheapest day/night camera in q-see product lineup
LEDS provide a wide area of lighting that matches the lens field of view - this is well designed as some cameras I used have a problem witht the LEDS overshooting the field of view of the camera.
Comes with a really long cable (100 feet+) and it runs power plus video together
wide field of view lens covers a broad area without any fisheye distortion. For me this is about a 50' x 50' front yard
(cable is longer on this model than their more expensive model by about an extra 45 feet)
Cons ($130)
Lacks any zoom or focus control for the lens (present on the $230 version and up - the K540 and K550 which are really nice night cams)
not as good of a mounting bracket as the $230 version
washed out picture compared to the Sony image sensor in the $230 camera - it uses the super had sensor designed for security use, this is more of a camcorder 1/3" sensor which is good considering most of these cameras use 1/4" sensors. I think the difference is just that the K540 and 550 cameras have better quality (the super had sony sensors) which makes side by side comparisons evident.
more picture noise at night compared to the Sony image sensor camera.
Less resolution than the $230 camera - picture is not as sharp, but that is not important because the recorder only records at CIF resolution, so you don't get the 540 lines anyways!
Summary -
I'm really nitpicking here - these are all small differences that separate the low end, mid range, and their high end camera (which amazon did not carry when I purchased them - the high end is just the mid range with higher power LEDS and a higher price tag in the $300's). All of them do what they say - they give you a picture day or night. Unlike other day/night cameras these provide color at night if enough light is present or black/white if using the LEDs. I prefer the color from the Sony image sensor, and I like the adjustable lens on the sony based camera. Is it worth another $100? That depends. Both cameras work well and do what they say - it's only when you put their pictures side by side that the quality difference is noticable.
I think both cameras have a use which is why I bought one of each and put them in different locations. If the tradeoff is quality vs. having more views of a building, then the less expensive camera wins because you can cover more doors and gates using them. On the other hand, if you already have Sony cameras in your security system, the extra $100 will make the q-see sony based mid-range model blend into your existing system better. Having a choice and knowing what you get or give up is important which is why we post reviews. I'm happy with both of my cameras in their applications and I won't change them out. If I buy another camera, I would consider it's use to decide which model to buy. The zoom lens on the $230 model q-see camera is nice for a long driveway, but a wide view of a close porch would probably best be served with one of the $130 models. I chose to run the 100 foot cable over the roof of my house and enter through the back to the DVR system. NOTE none of the q-see cams have a microphone, yet their dvrs have an audio in for each video channel - the reason for this is that there are no laws broken recording video, but the minute you add audio you violate wiretapping laws in some states. You can counter this often with a sign conspicuously posted that states this area is under video and audio surveilance - now you are in the clear legally.

This is my seventh, (that I have kept), security camera and the best so far. I am still looking for a good PTZ camera. This camera has a nice high resolution, and excellent night vision for the distance I needed. Thanks to Clover Electronics. I avoid Swann camera products for their lower quality and very very poor customer service (sorry, I just had to get this in).
